Abstract

As sustainability has become a crucial term for modern design practices, temporary exhibitions also need to adapt a sustainable approach in their design process. However, only a few studies have suggested a method to achieve sustainability in exhibition design. By questioning the notion of combining sustainability and temporary exhibitions, this study investigates methods of creating a sustainable display system for temporary exhibitions. The background of the topic is introduced with essential terms, the current situation and example cases related to temporary exhibitions, sustainability in exhibition design and display systems. In addition, two temporary exhibition design projects are described to examine the practical insights from the process of designing a display structure. As the final outcome, a concept display system for temporary exhibitions is suggested. The findings of this study reveal that temporality and sustainability in exhibition design pursue efficiency as their ultimate common goal. By creating a stackable, portable display system that can cover general functions of an exhibition, the chance of reusing the structure increases as it holds a great level of flexibility. Using a material that is local, low energy and green certified can also enhance the sustainability of a temporary exhibition. In conclusion, this work presents a display system based on concepts of temporality and sustainability, showing that a sustainable approach can be adapted when designing temporary exhibitions.
