Abstract

This thesis examines the impact of elimination from the UEFA Champions League (UCL) on the stock prices of publicly listed European football clubs. Focusing on the semi-strong form of the Efficient Market Hypothesis (EMH) and employing the event study methodology, the study investigates whether sporting failures cause statistically and economically significant abnormal returns, and whether these reactions differ between the group- and knockout stages of the competition. The thesis analyses a sample of 120 elimination events across 13 listed European clubs from the 2000-2001 to 2024-2025 footballing seasons. Normal returns are estimated using the market model with an estimation window of (-200, -20). The empirical results reveal that UCL elimination acts as a significant negative financial shock. The study finds a cumulative average abnormal return (CAAR) of approximately -2.8% during the event window (0,2), which is statistically significant at the 1% level. While the CAAR for the knockout stages is slightly larger compared to the group stage, this difference was found not to be statistically significant. Overall, the findings support the notion that financial markets efficiently price in the expected cash flow losses associated with sporting failures. The results also highlight an inherent event-driven risk in footballing stocks and underscore the need for club management to diversify commercial revenue streams independent of on-pitch success.

Aineisto koostuu 120 putoamistapahtumasta 13 eri pörssilistatulta eurooppalaiselta seuralta. Tutkimuksen aikajänteenä on jalkapallokaudet kaudesta 2000-2001 kauteen 2024-2025.
