Uhmaa ja flirttiä - esitettyä tyttöyttä. Autoetnografinen tutkielma teiniaikaisten omakuvien merkityksistä

Abstract

Tämä Maisterin opinnäytetyö on autoetnografia, jonka keskiössä on 2000-luvun alussa tuotettu teini-ikäisen tytön videoaineisto. Aineisto koostuu tytön itsestään kuvaamista otoksista, joissa eksistentialistisen tarkastelun alla ovat sekä tytön ruumis että sen yksityiskohdat. Osa kuvista on nykypäivän selfieihin verrattavissa olevia poseerauskuvia, joissa toistuvat erilaiset ilmeet ja eleet. Ne edustavat erilaisia tyttöyden tyylejä ja muodostavat aineiston analyysissä kolme kuvatyyppiä: viettelijätär-, söpö- ja kovis-tyypit. Opinnäyte on muodoltaan esitys, jossa omahuoneen estradilla nähdään erilaiset tyttöyden esitykset.

Opinnäyte tarkastelee aineistoa feministisestä näkökulmasta. Tutkimustehtävänä on selvittää, miten videoaineiston tyttö näkee, kokee ja esittää itsensä. Opinnäyte on kiinnostunut tyttöyden representaatioiden kytköksistä kulttuurisiin ilmiöihin ja järjestelmiin. Työ pohtii kuvaston tuottamisen merkityksiä nuoren identiteetin rakentumisen kannalta sekä sitä, miten omakuvailulla voisi hyödyttää kuvataidekasvatuksen traditiota.

Tutkielman työprosessi oli avoin ja aineistolähtöinen. Aineistoa tarkasteltiin lähiluvun metodia soveltaen, jolloin ymmärrys aineistosta syntyi hiljalleen useiden lukukertojen kerrostumina. Visuaalisesta aineistosta nousi muistelemalla tavoitettuja kokemuksia, jotka muodostivat narratiivisen aineiston videokuvaston rinnalle. Nämä yhdessä synnyttivät tekstissä dialogin. Opinnäyte edustaa Fenomenologis-hermeneuttista tutkimusotetta, joka nojaa kokemukselliseen tietoon, eikä vaadi aineiston ennalta teoretisointia. Se pyrkii aineistosta nousevien ilmiöiden kokonaisvaltaiseen ymmärrykseen.

Opinnäyte liittyy visuaalisen kulttuurin paradigmaan hyödyntäen visuaalisenkulttuurin tutkimuksen ja sosiologian, sekä tyttötutkimuksen teorioita. Tutkielma osuu kiinnostuksiltaan eri tieteenalojen leikkauspisteeseen. Aineistosta nousevat teemalliset kokonaisuudet muodostuvat sukupuolen, seksuaalisuuden ja ruumiillisuuden ympärille. Tyttörepresentaatioita tarkastellaan suhteessa visuaalisen mediakulttuurin laajempiin ilmiöihin.

Aineiston analyysin tuloksena voidaan todeta tyttöyden olevan monisyisesti erilaisiin paradoksaalisiin käytäntöihin ja odotuksiin kytkettyä. Tyttöys ja naiseus rakentuvat kulttuurin tuottamana, toistoin ja toisin toistaen. Sukupuoliesityksillä on pitkä visuaaliseen kulttuuriin kietoutunut historia.

This Master's thesis is an auto-ethnography focusing on the teenage girl's video material produced in the early 2000s. The material consists of the girl's self-portraits, where her body and its details are under examination of existentialism. Some of the images are poses that are comparable to today's selfies, with repetitive expressions and gestures. They represent different styles of girlhood, forming, in the analysis of the material, three types of images: seductive, cute and tough. The thesis is in the form of a performance, in which different presentations of the girlhood are shown on the stage of the girl’s own room.

The thesis examines the material with a feminist attitude. The task of the research is to find out how the girl in the video sees, experiences and represents herself. The thesis is interested in linking the representations of the girl to cultural phenomena and systems. The work considers the significance of producing albums in terms of building a young person's identity, and how self-illustration could benefit the tradition of fine arts education.

The thesis process was open and resource-oriented. The material was examined using the close-up method, where the understanding of the data was gradually created as a layer of several readings. The experiences that formed narrative material alongside the video, were gained from the visual material by reminiscence. These together produced the dialogue in the text. The thesis represents a phenomenological-hermeneutical research approach that relies on experiential knowledge and does not require prior theorizing of the material. It strives for a comprehensive understanding of emerging phenomena.

The thesis is related to the visual culture paradigm, utilizing the theories of visual culture research and sociology, as well as girl studies. The thesis is of interest to the intersection of different disciplines. The thematic entities emerging from the material are made up of gender, sexuality and corporeality. Girl representations are considered in relation to the extensive phenomena of the visual media culture.

As a result of the analysis of the material, it can be stated that the girlhood is connected to various paradoxical practices and expectations. Girlhood and femininity are built by culture and repetition. Gender performances have a long history entwined in visual culture.
