Abstract

Asterisk is software that turns an ordinary computer into a communications server. Asterisk is an IP-PBX system. PBX stands for Private Branch Exchange which means a private telephone system which is part of a larger network system that exchange information. Traditionally the larger network system is the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN). Asterisk is free and open source. In other words Asterisk acts as a middleware between different telephone technologies and various telephone applications. Host processing of TDM and DSP has made it possible to use Asterisk with inexpensive hardware in order to build flexible PBX platforms. Asterisk supports a wide range of protocols for the handling and transmission of voice which makes it a high end IPPBX system. Even Asterisk could be able to offer all the above described services the management and handling of it also seems to be difficult. In other words the configuration and set up of all the Asterisk applications including presence information and the management of them needs a number of steps that discourage most of the operators, even the experts. Thus, this study performs the integration of a web based management system for Asterisk with a Presence Server and also studies its usability in order to make it as user friendly as possible. The web based management system simplifies the use and maintenance of Asterisk for users even from those with no experience at all. The easy web based configuration and set up of Asterisk and presence server in combination with offered services makes Asterisk a high end IP based PBX platform.
