Abstract

In the field of information design and data visualisation, data is commonly perceived as a neutral, rational, and aseptic piece of information. However, this research challenges this notion, revealing that data inherently possesses a human dimension, which makes it imperfect and strictly connected to an emotional response. Drawing from an extensive review of academic literature, as well as analysis of various multimedia resources and exemplary projects that successfully enhance the human dimension in their data representation, this thesis lays out the main visual methodologies and techniques that help amplify and accentuate this human and emotional factor of data. Moreover, this research is practically applied and supported by a design project. Utilising a dataset which is human-gathered and inherently emotional, regarding the author’s human connections and friendships, two distinct data visualisations are crafted using opposite methodologies. While the first narrative uses conventional graphs and an aseptic approach, the second iteration applies the previously laid out techniques, tailored to magnify the human and emotional aspects of the dataset. Through a process of user testing, the reactions elicited by both visualisations are analysed to obtain qualitative feedback. The findings from both the research and the supporting project unequivocally prove the significance and positive outcomes of representing data through a lens that embraces its human and emotional dimensions. Moreover, the whole study supports the efficacy of the methodologies that convey this essential human aspect of data.
