Abstract
Our lives are organised around work—we spend the better part of our waking hours working for wages, after all. Yet, the future of work appears to be unsustainable: the contemporary labour landscape is increasingly riddled with precarious and harmful working conditions. Among the creative fields, designers are often left to fend for themselves in the growing disconnection within the world of work. Hence, the need for potential alternatives becomes more relevant than before. Patterns of Collaboration is a personal investigation of the designer collective as an alternative approach to work. The intention of this thesis is to highlight the potential of this collective approach by mapping the reasons that lead designers to form collectives and by underlining the advantages of working in such a constellation. The function of sharing a specific designer collective as a concrete example is to inspire other designers to action. The research is guided by the two-part question: What leads designers to form collectives, and what are the advantages of working in one? To identify answers, I approach the question through the qualitative methodology of a case study on Kuosikollektiivi, our surface pattern design collective. Through triangulation of my autoethnographic journal with our group interview, I am able to process and analyse the data in tandem. The findings indicate that the formation of a designer collective is spurred by a shared educational experience, by a lack of industry opportunities, and by challenging working conditions. Further, the results point towards the designer collective as advantageous in terms of choosing who one works with, of sharing the labour through a collective practice, and of collaborating in a flexible manner. The implications suggest that as the predominant models of work perpetuate harmful conventions, the designer collective offers designers the agency to explore alternative approaches of reorganising our working lives in solidarity with each other. A recommendation for future investigation is to expand the research to include multiple collectives of varying demographics for a more nuanced understanding of the designer collective as an alternative approach to work—for a more sustainable future of work.Våra liv är organiserade kring arbete—vi tillbringar större delen av vår vakna tid med att arbeta för lön, trots allt. Ändå tycks arbetets framtid vara ohållbar: det samtida arbetslandskapet är alltmer genomsyrat av prekära och skadliga arbetsförhållanden. Bland de kreativa arbetsområdena lämnas designers ofta till att klara sig själva i den växande distanseringen inom arbetsvärlden. Därför blir behovet av potentiella alternativ mer relevant än tidigare. Patterns of Collaboration är en personlig forskning av designerkollektivet som ett alternativt arbetssätt. Resultaten pekar vidare mot att designerkollektivet är fördelaktigt när det gäller att välja vem man arbetar med, att dela på arbetsmängden genom en kollektiv praktik och att samarbeta på ett flexibelt sätt. Implikationerna tyder på att eftersom de dominerande arbetsmodellerna vidmakthåller ohållbara och skadliga konventioner, erbjuder designerkollektivet designers personlig inverkan att utforska alternativa tillvägagångssätt för att omorganisera vårt arbetsliv i solidaritet med varandra. En rekommendation för framtida undersökningar är att utöka forskningen till att omfatta flera kollektiv med varierande demografi för en mer nyanserad förståelse av designerkollektivet som ett alternativt arbetssätt—för en mer hållbar arbetsframtid.Description
