Abstract
Reducing energy consumption is a great concern nowadays. Lighting systems in buildings are responsible for a major chunk of buildings' energy consumption. A new control algorithm has been proposed to decrease the energy used in distributed lighting systems in office areas while maintaining the workers' productivity and their well-being. In this thesis, a control algorithm running over a reference tracking PID controller to automatically maintain stable office illuminance, without using a lux meter, but rather using AI to estimate the illuminance. The proposed method target is to maintain an illuminance value measured by the office ceiling, and thus, offering a suitable illuminance over the workers' office surfaces. The introduced control algorithm has proven to decrease energy consumption in distributed lighting systems up to 35 percent.
