Abstract

Kuvajournalistin työn tavoitteellisuus ja nopea tahti ovat ajaneet minut tekemään henkilökohtaisia dokumentaarisia projekteja, joissa informaation sijasta keskipisteessä ovat tulkinnallisuus ja epäsuorat viittaukset totuudenmukaisiin tapahtumiin. Kuvajournalismin tarkoitus on tehdä vaikeista aiheista lukijoille ymmärrettäviä, eikä yksinkertaisista aiheista haasteellista tulkintaa, mutta oma kiinnostukseni epäsuoraan aiheen käsittelyyn ajaa minua ajattelemaan valokuvan laajempia mahdollisuuksia ja kiinnostus journalismiin hiipuu. Misunderstood On Purpose on dokumentaarinen valokuvaprojekti maailman onnellisimmasta valtiosta, jonka keskiössä ovat sattumalta vastaan tulleet tapahtumat liikkuessani ympäri Suomea ilman etukäteen määrättyä päämäärää tai aikataulua. Projekti sai alkunsa työskennellessäni Helsingin Sanomissa vuosien 2015-2019 välisenä aikana tehdessäni kuvasarjoja suomalaisuuden yksityiskohdista. Sinä aikana Suomi tuli useamman kerran mainituksi maailman onnellisimpana valtiona YK:n onnellisuusraportissa. Huomasin ihmisten kummeksuvan titteliä ja päätin tehdä aiheesta kuvasarjan. Misunderstood On Purpose on kertomus Suomesta joka pyrkii osoittamaan katseita onnellisuusraportin tarpeeseen ja sen luomaan Suomi-kuvaan kyseenalaistaen sitä. Onnellisimman valtion titteli on sinällään hankala, koska siihen turvautuessa yhteiskunnan haasteet voivat tulla sivuutetuksi. Opinnäytetyöni tekstiosiossa perustelen tarvettani siirtyä nopeasta lehtikuvasta hitaampaan tekemiseen avaamalla keskeisiä menetelmiäni, kuvaamisen prosesseja ja niihin kohdistuvia haasteita. Avaan myös hitaan dokumentaarisen työn merkitystä yhteiskunnallisessa keskustelussa ja sitä mitä journalismi jättää näyttämättä. Opinnäytteen taiteellinen osuus on vielä keskeneräinen, ja tulen kuvaamaan projektia vielä noin kahden vuoden ajan, jonka jälkeen tavoitteeni on tehdä projektista kirja. Suuri osa kuvista on tuotettu 2020-2021 välisenä aikana, mutta joukossa on kuvia siltä myös ajalta, kun työskentelin vielä Helsingin Sanomissa. Taiteellinen osuus näyttää, mitä löytyy kun liikkuu ilman päämäärää. Pitäydyn etsimässä odottamattomia tapahtumia, jotta myös se osa kansasta tulisi löydetyksi, joka pitää itsestään pienempää meteliä.

The purposefulness and fast pace of the photojournalist’s work has driven me to produce personal documentary projects where, instead of information, the focus is on interpretation and indirect references to truthful events. The purpose of photojournalism is to make difficult subjects understandable to readers, rather than challenging interpretations of simple subjects, but my own interest in indirect subject handling drives me to think about the wider possibilities of photography therefor my interest in journalism wears off. Misunderstood On Purpose is a documentary photo project about the happiest country in the world, which focuses on events that happen by chance while moving around Finland without a pre-determined goal or schedule. The project began when I worked at Helsingin Sanomat between 2015 and 2019, making bodies of work about the details of Finnishness. During that time, Finland was mentioned several times as the happiest country in the world in the UN Happiness Report. I noticed people wondering about the title and I decided to make a work on the subject. Misunderstood On Purpose is a story about Finland that seeks to look at the need for a Happiness Report and create an image of Finland by questioning it. The title of the happiest state is awkward, because by referencing to it, the challenges of society can be ignored. In the text section of my thesis, I justify my need to move from fast press photography to a slower approach by opening up my key methods, working processes, and the challenges they pose. I also discuss the importance of slow documentary work in social debate and what journalism fails to show. The artistic part of the thesis is still unfinished, and I will be working on the project for about two more years, after which my goal is to make a book. Most of the images seen in the thesis were produced between 2020 and 2021, but there are also images from the time when I was still working for Helsingin Sanomat. The artistic part shows what can be found when moving without a goal. I have to look for unexpected events so that the part of the population that makes less noise is seen.
