The effect of heatwaves and future climates on the overheating of apartment buildings

Abstract

Climate change causes a global increase in outdoor temperatures and extreme weather conditions to become more common. Mechanical cooling solutions have been used in Finnish office and commercial buildings for a long time, but these are rarely used in residential buildings. Therefore, climate change affects the most on residential buildings in Finland. This thesis aims to investigate the effect of heatwaves and future weather on the overheating of an apartment building in Helsinki and to find alternatives to prevent this. Of the investigated passive cooling measures, openable windows was the most effective way to prevent overheating of the building, which strongly depends on the occupant's behavior. However, according to the Finnish Ministry of the Environment, this is not an acceptable measure in the degree hour review. Openable windows were the only measure of the investigated passive measures that allowed degree hours above 27 °C to be kept below 150 degree hours under the typical current and future climates. Without passive cooling measures, the warmest bedroom’s degree hours above 27 °C increased by 28 % during the typical future climate compared to the current typical climate. However, the percentage increase is significantly higher with passive cooling measures. When using other passive cooling measures than openable windows, the daily indoor temperature trend is increasing throughout heatwaves, almost without exception, regardless of the heatwave length or the time of the hottest day during the heatwave. Therefore, prolonged heatwaves cause a significant risk of overheating for buildings without mechanical cooling measures.

Ilmastonmuutos aiheuttaa globaalisti ulkolämpötilojen kasvua, sekä ääriolosuhteiden yleistymistä. Suomalaisissa toimisto- ja liikerakennuksissa on jo pitkään käytetty aktiivisia jäähdytysratkaisuja, mutta asuinrakennuksissa näitä esiintyy vain harvoin. Tämän vuoksi ilmastonmuutos vaikuttaa suomalaisesta rakennuskannasta eniten asuinrakennuksiin. Tämän työn tarkoituksena on tutkia helleaaltojen ja tulevaisuuden sään vaikutusta Helsingissä sijaitsevan asuinkerrostalon ylilämpenemiseen, sekä tarkastellaan vaihtoehtoja tämän ehkäisemiseksi. Tutkituista passiivisista jäähdytystoimista tehokkaimmaksi keinoksi ehkäistä rakennuksen ylilämpenemistä löydettiin avattavat ikkunat, mikä on vahvasti käyttäjästä riippuvaista. Tämä ei ole kuitenkaan Ympäristöministeriön mukaisessa astetuntitarkastelussa hyväksyttävä keino. Tämä oli tutkituista passiivisista toimenpiteistä ja näiden yhdistelmistä ainoa, jonka avulla astetunnit yli 27 °C:n kyettiin pitämään alle 150 astetunnin niin nykyajan kuin tulevaisuuden tyypillisessä ilmastossa. Ilman passiivisia jäähdytysratkaisuja tulevaisuuden tyypillisellä ilmastolla rakennuksen astetunnit yli 27 °C:n kasvoivat 28 prosenttia verrattuna nykyajan tyypilliseen ilmastoon, mutta käytettäessä passiivisia jäähdytysratkaisuja prosentuaalinen kasvu on merkittävästi enemmän. Käytettäessä muita passiivisia jäähdytysratkaisuja kuin avattavia ikkunoita, päivittäisen sisälämpötilan trendi on kasvava läpi helleaaltojen lähes poikkeuksetta riippumatta helleaallon pituudesta tai ulkolämpötilaltaan kuumimman päivän ajankohdasta helleaallon aikana. Tämän vuoksi pitkittyvät helleaallot ovat merkittävä ylilämpenemisen riski rakennuksille, joissa ei ole käytössä aktiivisia jäähdytysratkaisuja.
