Abstract

The aim for this Master's thesis was to find the influences that a new filler type introduces to papermaking process and to important paper properties. Copy paper has very specific quality requirements to fulfil printing machine manufacturers' standards. The new filler introduces changes to the paper machine process parameters, which need to be optimized for the new filler. The quality requirements of the finished paper must be fulfilled. This work was done with a fourdrinier machine equipped with a dandy roll. Calcium carbonate was used as the filler. The literature part focused on presenting fine paper and printing methods. It discussed run ability and printability requirements based on paper and printing machine specifications and studied paper machine wet end construction and its effect on the important paper qualities, based on the product analysis. It also described the mechanisms influencing the sheet structure (curl) of the paper. It studied the differences between the old and the new filler pigment, based on basic filler quality differences, pilot machine trial results and paper mill experiences. In addition, it studied the effect of the retention system, internal sizing and surface sizing between the two fillers. The experimental part occurred in two stages. The first stage focused on the differences between the two fillers, as well as how the changes in the paper machine process parameter affected the paper structure and physical properties. In the second stage, the effects of the two most significant parameters were further verified, and their effects on the functional printing properties examined. The results from the first experimental part showed that physical improvements, using the new filler, were an increase in bulk and optical properties. Additionally, the results showed that the most influential paper machine parameters affecting important paper properties were the dandy roll speed and micropartic1e dosage. In the second part optimal areas for dandy roll speed and micro particle dosage were discovered, in order for the paper to have good functional properties and a low dusting tendency in printing.

Tämän diplomityön tavoitteena oli selvittää uuden täyteainetyypin käyttöönoton vaikutuksia paperikoneprosessiin ja paperin ominaisuuksiin. Kopiopaperilla on tarkat laatuvaatimukset jotka sen tulee täyttää sujuvan ajettavuuden saavuttamiseksi painokoneessa. Uuden täyteaineen käyttöönotto tuo tullessaan muutoksia paperikoneen ajoparametreihin, jotka on optimoitava uudelle täyteaineelle, jotta tarvittavat laatuvaatimukset paperille täyttyvät. Työ tehtiin eräälle tasoviirakoneelle joka oli varustettu viirarullalla ja täyteaineena käytössä oli kalsiumkarbonaatti. Kirjallisuusosassa tutustuttiin hienopapereihin yleisesti ja niiden painatukseen käytettäviin painomenetelmiin tuomalla esiin menetelmien vaatimukset ajettavuuden kannalta. Johtopaat6sten perusteella koottiin tuoteanalyysi kopio- ja digitaalipapereille. Tuoteanalyysin pohjalta käsiteltiin paperikoneen märänpään rakennetta ja sen vaikutusta paperille tärkeisiin ominaisuuksiin. Tuotiin esiin myös paperin käyryyteen vaikuttavat seikat. Käytössä ollut täyteaine, uusi täyteaine sekä niiden tuotantotavat kuvailtiin ja täyteaineiden välille haettiin eroja. Eroja haettiin täyteaineiden peruseroista, tehdyistä pilot-koneajoista täyteaineiden välillä sekä aiemmista kokemuksista muilla paperikoneilla. Lisäksi täyteaineiden vaikutusta retentioon, massaliimaukseen sekä pintaliimaukseen käsiteltiin. Kokeellinen osa suoritettiin kaksiosaisena, jossa ensimmäisessä osassa keskityttiin vanhan ja uuden täyteaineen eroavaisuuksiin sekä tehtiin uudella täyteaineella muutoksia prosessiparametreihin ja tutkittiin niiden vaikutusta paperin rakenteeseen ja fysikaalisiin ominaisuuksiin. Toisessa osassa toistettiin kahden merkittävimmän vaikutuksen omaavan prosessiparametrin tutkiminen lisättynä funktionaalisilla painatustesteillä joilla tutkittiin tuotetun paperin loppukäyttöominaisuuksia. Tuloksissa havaittiin ensimmäisessä osassa uudella täyteaineella tiettyjen paperiominaisuuksia parantuvan, kuten bulkin ja optisten ominaisuuksien. Lisäksi prosessiparametrien muutoksissa havaittiin viirarullan nopeudella sekä mikropartikkelin annostuksella olevan suurinta vaikutusta tärkeisiin ominaisuuksiin. Toisessa osassa viirarullan nopeudelle sekä mikropartikkelille havaittiin tietyt optimialueet hyvälle paperin käyttäytymiselle painatuksessa sekä paperin alhaiselle pölyämistaipumukselle.
