Abstract
Stormwater management is becoming increasingly important as heavy rainfall events grow more frequent due to climate change. Accurate modeling tools are needed to support planning and mitigation in complex environments. This study evaluates the performance of the Storm Water Management Model (SWMM) in a semi-urban area in Espoo, Finland. Semi-urban areas have both impervious and pervious surfaces, which makes stormwater simulation more complex. The main objective is to assess the accuracy of the SWMM model by comparing simulation results with observed runoff data, and to identify key factors affecting model per-formance. The research uses rainfall and flow data from May to September 2005 to run and calibrate the SWMM model. A genetic algorithm is used to automatically calibrate model parameters and improve accuracy. The results show that SWMM, with proper calibration and the groundwater module, can simulate stormwater runoff well in semi-urban areas. The study also discusses the challenges and provides suggestions for future applications of SWMM in similar regions.
