Abstract

The aim of this Master's Thesis was to give a new point of view for the production planning at the Ihalainen limestone mine of Nordkalk Corporation in Lappeenranta, Finland. Other goals of this study were to indicate the risks of the operation, as well as the possible future turning points in the production rates. In general, the future behaviour of the production rates from the open pit was very much in focus. The base for this study was formed by existing information, available at the mine site. The geological database of the mine, the rock mechanical studies, the plans for overburden removal and the prevailing market scenario, gave the starting point from where to begin the planning work. The planning work for the study was strongly influenced by the practices used for mine planning at the mine site. Based on this information, the maximum outer limits of the open pit were defined by using Gemcom mine planning software. Also the yearly excavation plans were made for the certain time period. As a result of this planning work, an estimate of the final practical pit limits was also made. The changes in the production rates of the different rock types excavated were evaluated with the concrete results of the study. The growth of the total excavation volumes sets high challenges for the management of the open pit operation, as well as for the crushing and sorting processes. The biggest questions in this study are therefore related to the changes in the production rates of the feed. The growing volume of waste rock that will be produced is also a challenge for the operation. The answers to these questions must be found soon, to secure the future production of the mine. In the near future, there probably won't be any big problems ahead at the Ihalainen mine that couldn't be overcome. However, within the study period the production will face many challenges that may threaten the continuity of the operation. Because of this, attention should be paid early enough to the future obstacles of the production and more effort should be put into the long term planning of the operation. The scope of this study was limited, but the main outlines and challenges that it sets for the operation will not change much overall, even if the circumstances do. The definition of production turning points and risks, which was done via periodical mining plans, can be considered as the most essential results of this work.

Diplomityön tavoitteena on ollut uuden näkökulman antaminen Nordkalk Oyj Abp:n Ihalaisten kaivoksen tuotannon suunnittelulle. Tuotannon kehityksen pohdinta ja tuotannon riskien sekä muutos- ja epäkohtien paikantaminen ovat myös olleet oleellinen osa työn tavoitteita. Lähtökohtina diplomityön teolle ovat olleet kaivoksen geologinen tietokanta, kalliomekaaniset selvitykset, maanpoistosuunnitelmat sekä kaivoksen tuotannolle arvioidut markkinanäkymät. Näiden pohjalta on määritetty avolouhoksen maksimiäärirajat ja tehty vaiheittaiset louhintasuunnitelmat sekä arvio avolouhoksen lopullisista mittasuhteista käyttämällä Gemcom kaivossuunnitteluohjelmistoja. Ihalaisten kaivoksen käytännöillä on ollut vahva vaikutus suunnitelmien teossa. Diplomityön konkreettisten suunnittelutulosten avulla on tarkasteltu tuotannon kehitystä eri tuotelaatujen osalta. Tarkastelun tuloksena on havaittu, että kokonaistuotantomäärien kasvu asettaa suuret haasteet avolouhoksen tuotannon toteuttamiselle sekä louhimon toiminnan tehostamiselle. Kaivoksen tulee pystyä vastaamaan näihin haasteisiin tuotannon jatkuvuuden turvaamiseksi. Maanpoiston aikataulunmukainen toteutus ja kairausohjelman onnistunut läpivieminen ovat lähitulevaisuudessa kaivoksen toiminnan kannalta tärkeimpiä projekteja. Aivan lähiaikoina ei Ihalaisten kaivoksella ole odotettavissa ylitsepääsemättömiä ongelmia. Kuitenkin tarkastelujakson aikana kaivoksen tuotanto kohtaa useita toimintaa uhkaavia haasteita. Tämän vuoksi tulisi jo ajoissa kiinnittää huomio tulevaisuuteen ja lisätä pitkäntähtäimen suunnittelun painoarvoa kaivoksen toiminnassa. Diplomityön näkökulma on rajallinen, mutta sen kaivoksen toiminnalle antamat suuntaviivat ja haasteet tulevat pysymään pääpiirteittäin ennallaan olosuhteiden muuttuessakin. Työn keskeisimpinä tuloksina voidaan pitää tuotannon muutoskohtien sekä tuotannossa eteen tulevien riskien määrittämistä tehtyjen louhintasuunnitelmien pohjalta.
