Abstract

The Czochralski (CZ) crystal growth method is the most utilized way of producing high quality single crystal silicon for the semiconductor industry. During the energy-intensive process, furnace temperature exceeds 1420˚C and graphite resistance heaters are continuously operated for several days to maintain the thermal balance. Power reduction in the CZ process offers energy and material related cost reduction, improved crystal quality and yield, and higher heating efficiency. This thesis aimed to determine the energy consumption and heating efficiency of two different CZ furnaces at Okmetic Oy: Type 1 and Type 2. Data on cooling water flow and temperature as well as argon flow and furnace temperature were collected from the two furnace types. The energy consumption for different furnace components was calculated based on cooling water flow and temperature, and their respective insulating performance was evaluated according to the component specific cooling demand. The Type 2 CZ furnace was found to have overall better heating efficiency (38 %) as well as lower cooling system energy consumption (3.24 kWh/kg) than Type 1 (27 % and 4.56 kWh/kg respectively). This indicates that the insulation used in the Type 2 furnace (CBCF with graphite paint) performs better than the insulation in the Type 1 furnace (soft and rigid graphitized carbon felt). Type 1 exhibited poor insulating performance in the bottom chamber, which was expected based on previous internal studies. Type 2 had better chamber insulation but high electrode cooling demand despite lower heating energy demand per charged silicon kilogram. Based on the Type 1 results, insulation thickness in the Type 1 bottom chamber was increased in an additional exper-iment, which reduced overall cooling system energy consumption by 0.11 kWh/kg.
