Abstract

This thesis contributes to a deeper understanding of the hydrogen market’s service ecosystem and provides insights that can support strategic decision-making for project developers and service providers. The hydrogen economy is emerging as a key element in the transition toward low-carbon energy systems. This thesis explores the development of the hydrogen economy in Finland, with a specific focus on service demand across the hydrogen value chain. While technological and policy discussions often dominate the discourse, the role of services ranging from planning and permitting to operations and maintenance has received comparatively little attention. The research is based on a combination of a literature review and expert interviews with industry stakeholders. The findings reveal a sector still in its early stages, facing high capital costs, regulatory uncertainty, and limited demand for green hydrogen-derived products such as sustainable aviation fuel and green steel. Despite this, interest in clean hydrogen is growing, driven by European climate policy and corporate decarbonization goals.

Tämä opinnäytetyö syventää ymmärrystä vetymarkkinoiden palveluekosysteemistä ja tarjoaa näkemyksiä, jotka voivat tukea strategista päätöksentekoa hankekehittäjille ja palveluntarjoajille. Vetytalous on nousemassa keskeiseksi osaksi siirtymää kohti vähähiilisiä energiajärjestelmiä. Työssä tarkastellaan vetytalouden kehitystä Suomessa, erityisesti palvelukysynnän näkökulmasta koko vetyarvoketjussa. Vaikka teknologiset ja poliittiset aiheet hallitsevat usein keskustelua, ovat palvelut suunnittelusta ja luvi- tuksesta käyttöön ja kunnossapitoon saaneet verrattain vähän huomiota. Tutkimus perustuu kirjallisuuskatsaukseen ja asiantuntijahaastatteluihin, jotka tehtiin alan toimijoiden kanssa. Tulokset osoittavat, että ala on vielä alkuvaiheessa. Alan haasteisiin lukeutuu korkeat pääomakustannukset, sääntelyepävarmuus, sekä rajallinen kysyntä vihreään vetyyn perustuville tuotteille, kuten kestävälle lentopolttoaineelle ja vihreälle teräkselle. Tästä huolimatta kiinnostus puhtaaseen vetyyn on kasvussa erityisesti Euroopan ilmastopolitiikan ja yritysten hiilineutraaliustavoitteiden ansiosta.
