Abstract

This thesis studies the alignment between the global regulatory objectives of the European Union’s Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) and the local experiences of Finnish reporting companies. Based on standardization theory, the study explores how the CSRD’s standardized requirements align with the practical realities and interests of firms during the directive’s first year of implementation. The research adopts a qualitative multiple case study approach, utilizing semi-structured interviews with sustainability professionals from large and medium-sized Finnish listed companies. The findings reveal both areas of alignment and misalignment between EU-level goals and firm-level experiences. While companies generally support the CSRD’s aims of enhancing comparability, transparency, and digitalization, they also face challenges related to interpretation of regulation, resource intensiveness, and the risk of compliance-driven reporting. The study identifies key factors that facilitate alignment, including organizational context, leadership support, and the responsiveness of the standard to market needs. The results contribute to theory by extending research on the importance of contextual fit, stake-holder inclusion, and implementation support in regulatory standard-setting. Practically, the study offers a benchmark for peer organizations and insights for policymakers to refine future sustainability reporting frameworks.

Tämä tutkielma tarkastelee Euroopan unionin uuden yritysvastuuraportointidirektiivin (CSRD) globaalien tavoitteiden ja suomalaisten raportointiyritysten kokemusten välistä yhteensopivuutta. Tutkimus perustuu standardointiteoriaan ja selvittää, miten CSRD:n standardoidut raportointivaatimukset vastaavat yritysten käytännön tarpeita ja intressejä ensim-mäisen raportointivuoden aikana. Tutkimus toteutettiin laadullisena monitapaustutkimuksena, ja aineisto kerättiin teemahaastatteluilla suurten ja keskisuurten suomalaisten pörssiyritysten vastuullisuusasiantuntijoilta. Tulokset osoittavat sekä yhteneväisyyksiä että ristiriitoja EU-tason tavoitteiden ja yritysten kokemusten välillä. Yritykset tukevat yleisesti CSRD:n tavoitteita raportoinnin vertailtavuuden, läpinäkyvyyden ja digitalisaation edistämiseksi, mutta kohtaavat samalla haasteita liittyen regulaation tulkintaan, resursseihin ja puhtaasti lain noudattamiseen painottuvaan raportointikulttuuriin. Tutkimus tunnistaa keskeisiä tekijöitä, jotka edistävät tavoitteiden ja käytännön yhteensopivuutta, kuten organisaation konteksti, johdon tuki ja standardin markkinalähtöisyys. Teoreettisesti tutkimus syventää ymmärrystä sääntelyyn perustuvasta standardoinnista korostamalla kontekstisidonnaisuuden, osallistavuuden sekä tuen ja ohjauksen merkitystä. Käytännössä tutkimus tarjoaa vertailupohjan muille yrityksille ja suosituksia tulevien vastuullisuusraportointistandardien kehittämiseksi.
