Abstract
As the global economy, technology, and society evolve, studies indicate that design students feel unprepared for work, citing a gap in their education and a lack of confidence. Understanding the necessary skill set is not enough to compete with other applicants. Participants in this study who had some work experience felt more prepared to start working and more employable. Participants are interested in learning more about the industry and developing their skills. Therefore, it's essential to explore learning methods beyond the university curriculum.
This study reveals that student associations, such as Nuoret Designerit ry (NuDe), serve as social hubs and community spaces. They also have the potential to greatly enhance universities' efforts to prepare design students for the industry, boosting their confidence and professional connections. NuDe can support Aalto University design students by collaborating with the university and industry partners to create targeted events for design students.
This thesis aims to foster meaningful interactions between design students and the industry by identifying the potential role of student associations, such as NuDe, and focusing on their perspectives, while prioritizing tangible outcomes that students can engage with independently. The primary audience includes students interested in student association work or community collaboration. However, the findings will also benefit university educators and industry professionals who aim to support students pursuing a degree in design.
