Abstract

With the proliferation of mobile devices and internet usage, users have been increasingly storing their personal data in various entities, like personal desktop computers, mobile devices online cloud services. As the user data is increasing, the need to synchronize this user data is also growing at a fast rate. With this fast growth, the kind of protocols used the transports available and the different kinds of storage formats are also growing. In order for any mobile device to cater to these kinds of requirements, a standalone application that serves just a single protocol is not enough. There is a real need to integrate the various protocols, the various kinds of data storage and the various transport protocols into one seamless engine and serve the end-user sync requirements seamlessly. In this thesis, the requirements of a synchronization framework are synthesized, followed by an evaluation of existing synchronization frameworks. This evaluation gives an idea of what kind of capabilities are required to build a framework. The high level design is formulated with focus on external components and also the design of the internal components. This is followed by a detailed low-level design that concentrates on the class design details, the object flows, the sequence flows and so on. Given any framework, there would to be shortcomings that need to be mentioned so that the reader gets a correct picture of the capabilities of the solution. The final chapters aim to list these shortcomings and possible alternatives which would form the future roadmap of the framework.
