Abstract

Consumers are flooded every day with endless ads, reviews, product comparisons and recommendations across digital platforms. But does more information ac-tually help them make better decisions? The purpose of this thesis is to cover how information overload (IO) affects con-sumer decision-making, especially in digital marketing environments. Researchers from various fields often approach information overload from different perspectives. This makes it challenging to form a unified understanding of the phenomenon. This thesis aims to address this gap by bringing together insights from multiple disciplines. The findings suggest that the occurrence of information overload is not only caused by having too much information. It is also influenced by how information is presented, how the digital environment is structured and the individual differences between consumers. When overload arises, it is likely to have several negative consequences for consumer decision-making, including reduced decision quality, confusion, fatigue and even purchase avoidance. The findings also suggest different ways that consumers can deal with information overload, such as using mental strategies or digital tools to make the process of handling information easier.

Kuluttajat kohtaavat päivittäin loputtomia määriä mainoksia, arvosteluja, tuotevertailuja sekä -suosituksia. Mutta auttaako suuri määrä tietoa heitä oikeasti tekemään parempia päätöksiä? Tämän tutkielman tarkoitus on tarkastella, miten informaatioähky (information overload) vaikuttaa kuluttajien päätöksentekoon, erityisesti digitaalisen markkinoinnin ympäristöissä.
