Abstract
This thesis examines how the wage premium of higher educated workers, referred to as the skill premium, in the United States is affected by changes in the supply and demand of skilled labour. Drawing from previous literature, the thesis anal-yses the development of the skill premium caused by skill-biased technological change (SBTC), which depicts the within-industry shift toward non-routine tasks and the following increase in demand for educated workers. At the same time the thesis reviews how the simultaneous growth in the supply of a skilled workforce has had an opposing effect to the skill premium. For the empirical analysis, the thesis utilizes two complementary approaches. A micro-level regression model and an aggregate time-series model, based on a framework from previous litera-ture discussing SBTC. These models are estimated using CPS data from 1989 – 2023. The results reveal contrasting patterns. With the aggregate model showing a negative relationship between the skill supply and skill premium and the micro-level model finding positive association. These findings display how the supply and demand factors play opposing roles in the development of the skill premium, with growing supply applying downwards pressure and ongoing technological in-novation doing the opposite. This further strengthens the findings of previous lit-erature on this topic and showcases how the similar development has continued even after the turn of the century.
Tässä kandidaatintutkielmassa tarkastellaan, miten korkeammin koulutettujen työntekijöiden palkkapreemio, eli taitopreemio, Yhdysvalloissa määräytyy koulutetun työvoiman tarjonnan ja kysynnän muutosten seurauksena. Aiemman kirjallisuuden pohjalta tutkielmassa analysoidaan taitopreemion kehitystä taitovinoutuneen teknologisen muutoksen (skill-biased technological change, SBTC) kautta, joka kuvaa tuotannon sisäistä siirtymää kohti ei-rutiininomaisia tehtäviä ja siitä seuraavaa koulutetun työvoiman kysynnän kasvua. Samalla tarkastellaan, kuinka koulutetun työvoiman samanaikainen tarjonnan kasvu on vaikuttanut taitopreemioon sitä alentavasti.
Empiirisessä analyysissä hyödynnetään kahta toisiaan täydentävää lähestymistapaa: mikrotason regressiomallia sekä aggregoitua aikasarjamallia, joka perustuu aiempaan SBTC-kirjallisuuteen. Mallit estimoidaan CPS-aineistolla vuosilta 1989–2023.
