Abstract
The thesis will tackle and advance the proposed masterplan for the Viikiranta Development Area as described in the zoning included in Viikinranta-Lahdenväylä / Yleiskaavoitus / Osayleiskaava. The proposed zoning is set to house 6000 up to ~7000 residents, as part of the “Viima” proposed light railway, while tackling the relationship with the southern Natura reserve, which it borders alongside a lowland canal, and the Vanhakaupunki river and delta to the east, which crosses the proposed zoning. The goal of this thesis is to set up a methodological approach to a land-use and connectivity implementation strategy, that integrates the proposed housing to enhance the social, leisure, and accessibility offers of the historical landmarks that link adjacent sites like Vanhakaupunki and Vantaa river, as well as tackling sufficiently, the relationship to the existing highway, which defines the northern border of the site. The principal driver is a concern for maximization of the positive user outcomes from the development, from its original jobs oriented and industrial focus. This means that alongside a concept for the general massing arrangement, setup of “recreation” and common use areas are equated as a framework for hybrid living, by considering pedestrian sets of circuits, that permit both healthy living, and the successful connectivity of the general public to Vanhakaupunki. The research question is focused on three vectors of enquiry. Firstly, the mapping of the city’s stated aims, as research on the theoretical and legally binding framework, to explain the source and purpose of such aims. Secondly, a research effort to find a conceptual framework that can be used as an interpretative tool to enable a constructive and broad critique of the city’s land-use policy and illustrations, toward a coherent, heterogeneous, and relevant detail plan. Thirdly, the interpretation in a design task of such complexities to the given site, taking into consideration its impact on surrounding context of the plan at an urban/city scale.Description
