Abstract

This thesis is focused on imagining a fictional world in which introversion would be a highly admired and desirable attribute in a person’s character, and speculating how this would affect and modify the objects around us. What emerging behaviors would everyday design support, if the majority of people were introverted in a speculative future? Which daily activities would consume our time, and how would we go about embracing introversion in different contexts? Would anything actually change in the physical and visual world? Given that the majority of people are extroverted, it’s safe to say that also the objects, services and architecture of modern day society support this more outward looking style of living, in addition to manners and social structures. Design plays a big role in composing such entireties and it tends to give human connection a great emphasis in the process. It is important to value this social and collaborative attitude, since it has indeed been proven crucial to the survival of our species. However this thesis wishes to avert our gaze towards the other, more quiet and reserved half of the population. These calm and introspective individuals have unique and thoughtful wishes and ideas that should be honored through design as well. Hence the ‘Introverted Objects’ aims to celebrate and empower introverts and make their quiet introverted needs heard. Through a literature review this thesis investigates the basis of the introverted attitude and how it is seen in an extroverted society. The study reveals limitations of self-expression, pressure to adapt and comply to the prevailing culture as well as fascination over one’s inner worlds. Diving into the literature concerning the introverted nature, many tips and tricks for surviving the everyday scenarios are presented. Examples of ridiculous gimmicks that are found in literature, such as retreating into a toilet alone to put a wet cloth over one’s head when socializing at a party gets overstimulating, are used as motivation to reimagine an introverted world in which introversion would be cherished and not something to be ashamed of. User research is used as a method to deepen the understanding of introverts as a focus group. A questionnaire and interviews are utilized to reveal the most common obstacles and unique experiences of introverts. The findings reveal that many introverts struggle to balance intimate relationships as well as to feel appreciated by other people over their more reserved tendencies. They also report being prone to replay and daydream over both real and imagined scenarios in their heads. The user research also reports of the frustration extroverts feel towards the introverted inability to show expression. To map out the market of introverted design and other speculative design objects, benchmarking is made use of. It is a good way to locate and contextualize the ‘Introverted Objects’ -project in the design field. Prototyping both low-fidelity and high-fidelity prototypes helps to test and validate the more abstract stages of the design process. It creates a tangible representation of the idea that is more easily conveyed to other people and the designer themselves. In order to finish the crucial prototyping phase, financial assistance from the Department of Design was utilized in the form of a grant. In the end this process results in a collection of three introverted objects, all of which are focused on a specific need or activity. They deal with the luxury of daydreaming, the desire to people-watch, while staying anonymous, and how eating alone shouldn’t be seen as anything but enjoyable. These objects are considered as design fiction and are meant to both encourage open-minded daydreaming of a potential future and also to awaken the viewer to examine the existing world from the introverted perspective.

Tässä opinnäytetyössä keskitytään luomaan kuvitteellinen maailma, jossa introverttius nähtäisiin erittäin ihailtuna ja toivottuna luonteenpiirteenä, ja pohtimaan, miten tämä vaikuttaisi ja muuttaisi meitä ympäröiviä esineitä. Millaisia toimintoja arjen muotoilu tukisi, jos suurin osa ihmisistä olisi introvertteja? Mitkä päivittäiset aktiviteetit veisivät aikaamme, ja miten introverttiutta voitaisiin hyväksyä eri konteksteissa? Muuttuisiko oikeastaan mikään fyysisessä ja visuaalisessa maailmassa? Valtaosan ihmisistä ollessa ekstrovertteja, voi varmuudella sanoa, että myös nyky-yhteiskunnan esineet, palvelut ja arkkitehtuuri tukevat tätä ulospäinsuuntautunutta elämäntyyliä, tapojen ja sosiaalisten rakenteiden lisäksi. Muotoilulla on suuri merkitys tällaisten kokonaisuuksien muodostamisessa, ja sillä on taipumus antaa tässä prosessissa suuri painoarvo ihmisten väliselle vuorovaikutukselle. On tärkeää arvostaa tällaista sosiaalista ja yhteistoiminnallista asennetta, koska se on todellakin osoittautunut ratkaisevan tärkeäksi lajimme selviytymiselle. Tässä tutkielmassa halutaan kuitenkin kääntää katseemme toiseen, hiljaisempaan ja varautuneempaan puoleen väestöstä. Näillä rauhallisilla ja sisäänpäinkääntyneillä yksilöillä on ainutlaatuisia ja harkittuja toiveita ja ideoita, joita tulisi kunnioittaa myös suunnittelun keinoin. Siksi ‘Introverted Objects’ pyrkii juhlistamaan ja voimaannuttamaan introvertteja ja saamaan heidän hiljaiset, introvertit tarpeensa kuuluviin. Tässä tutkielmassa tutkitaan kirjallisuuskatsauksen avulla introvertin asenteen perusteita ja sitä, miten se näkyy ekstrovertissa yhteiskunnassa. Tutkimus paljastaa itseilmaisun rajoituksia, paineita sopeutua ja mukautua vallitsevaan kulttuuriin sekä kiinnostusta omaan sisäiseen maailmaansa. Introverttiutta koskevaan kirjallisuuteen sukeltamalla esitellään monia vinkkejä ja temppuja arjen tilanteista selviytymiseen. Esimerkkejä kirjallisuudesta löytyvistä naurettavista kikoista, kuten vetäytyminen yksin vessaan ja märän rätin laittaminen pään päälle, kun seurustelu juhlissa käy ylistimuloivaksi, käytetään motivaationa kuvitella uudelleen introvertti maailma, jossa introverttiutta vaalittaisiin, eikä sitä tarvitsisi hävetä. Käyttäjätutkimusta käytetään menetelmänä, jolla syvennetään introverttien ymmärtämistä fokusryhmänä. Kyselylomaketta ja haastatteluja käytetään introverttien yleisimpien esteiden ja ainutlaatuisten kokemusten selvittämiseksi. Tulokset paljastavat, että monet introvertit kamppailevat tasapainotellessään intiimeissä ihmissuhteissa sekä tuntiessaan, etteivät muut ihmiset arvosta heidän pidättyväisempiä taipumuksiaan. He myös kertovat olevansa alttiita toistamaan ja haaveilemaan päässään sekä todellisia että kuviteltuja skenaarioita. Käyttäjätutkimuksessa kerrotaan myös ekstroverttien turhautumisesta introverttien kyvyttömyyteen ilmaista itseään. Introvertin muotoilun ja muiden spekulatiivisten muotoilukohteiden markkinoiden kartoittamiseksi käytetään vertailuanalyysiä. Se on hyvä tapa paikallistaa ja kontekstualisoida ‘Introverted Objects’ -projekti muotoilun kentällä. Prototyypointi sekä matala- että korkeatasoisten prototyyppien avulla auttaa testaamaan ja validoimaan niitä suunnitteluprosessin abstraktimpia vaiheita. Se tuottaa ideasta konkreettisen mallin, joka on helpompi esittää muille ihmisille ja suunnittelijalle itselleen. Ratkaisevan tärkeän prototyyppivaiheen loppuunsaattamiseksi käytettiin Muotoilun laitoksen taloudellista tukea apurahan muodossa. Lopulta prosessin tuloksena syntyi kolmen introvertin esineen kokoelma, jotka kaikki keskittyvät tiettyyn tarpeeseen tai toimintaan. Ne käsittelevät unelmoinnin ylellisyyttä, halua katsella ihmisiä pysyen samalla anonyyminä ja sitä, että yksin syömistä ei pitäisi pitää minään muuna kuin nautinnollisena. Näitä esineitä pidetään design fiktioina, ja niiden tarkoitus on, sekä kannustaa ennakkoluulottomaan unelmointiin mahdollisesta tulevaisuudesta, että herättää katsoja tarkastelemaan olemassa olevaa maailmaa introvertista näkökulmasta.
