Abstract

The thesis, On the Orientation in image-spaces, consists of a written part and an artistic part that are together presented as a book. The written part of my thesis is a narrative that unfolds my experience in an environment constructed solely of images commonly used for orientation purposes. I reflect on an immersion to be situated in a re-locational negotiation in the overload of images. The written part of the thesis is presented in three main chapters. The chapter, In and Out of Place, examines photographic images in the context of the web mapping platform Google earth. I study them as spatial surrogates while my tangible body is stationary and engrossed in place. The chapter, Point of Departure, focuses on describing my artistic progress and thoughts of the work Double Sunrise from 2017. Where I fly around the virtual world of Google Earth using a virtual reality headset in an isolated room. Which in addition is my visual part in the thesis linking up my experience of the journey. The chapter, The Multi-Locational, analyses the reproduced places of the web mapping platform and its allowance for a compressed mobility. My aim is to examine their acceleration in relation to ones corporeal and mediated presence. I conclude my thesis by reflecting on my overall experience of the web mapping platform and its effect on my spatial awareness. The visual part in the thesis that is presented in chapter two, consist with image documentations of the durational process and exhibition views from Photographic Centre Peri in August 2017. The visual parts of my thesis bridge the narrative with the written process.
