Abstract
Broken Holiday on valokuvan keinoin tehty tutkielma rantalomakokemuksesta. Se on valokuvaajan matka, jonka tavoitteena on löytää kirkas ymmärrys paikasta ja omasta suhteestaan siihen. Samalla se on reitti, kollektiivisesti tunnettu rantalomakokemus, johon katsoja voi sijoittaa itsensä. Pohjois-Kyproksella ja Turkissa vuosina 2016–2019 kuvattu kuvasarja näyttää tapoja havainnoida rantalomalla koettua rantamaisemaa hotellikeskittymineen. Yhdessä kuvat muodostavat havainnoinnin jatkumon, kuin kävelyn rannalla ja esittävät mielen sisäisiä ristiriitoja paikasta, jossa nostalgia, globaalit poliittiset kriisit ja matkaajan eskapistiset tarpeet sekoittuvat. Samalla kuvasarja on kulkijan yritys ymmärtää, miksi olen rantalomalla ja, mikä minun roolini tässä on. Opinnäytetyöni koostuu kuvallisesta ja kirjallisesta osasta. Kuvallinen osa sisältää Broken Holiday Album –valokuvakirjan, sekä Off-season – broken dreams -näyttelyn, joka oli esillä kesän 2019 aikana Helsingin Korjaamolla. Näyttelystä on tässä kirjallisessa osassa mukana teoskuvien lisäksi ripustuksesta dokumentaatiokuvat. Kirja on erillinen kokonaisuus, eikä sitä tule katsoa näyttelykatalogina. Kirjallisessa osassa pohdin perhealbumien lomakuvista nousevia muistoja ja niiden todenmukaisuutta, sekä pakettimatkailukulttuuria ja turismin sesonkiajattelun tuomia jälkiä. Käyn läpi matkakuvaamisen nykypäivän traditioita, kuten Instagram-kuvaamista ja selfieiden ottoa. Avaan myös Pohjois-Kyproksen historiaa, sekä kokemuksiani ristiriitaisesta lomakohteesta, kuten myös matkailukulttuurin tulevaisuuden näkymiä. Kirjallisessa osassa pohdin myös lomakohteita mielen näyttämönä ja tekstin joukossa on myös katkelmia matkapäiväkirjasta.Broken Holiday is a photography-based thesis about beach vacation experiences. It is a journey, in which a photographer tries to find a clear understanding of the place and her relationship to it. At the same time the work offers a route to a “generic” beach vacation experience, where the viewer can place him/herself. The series was photographed during the years 2016-2019 in Northern Cyprus and Turkey. The series shows ways of observing the beach landscapes with their hotel concentrations experienced during a beach holiday. Together, the images form a continuum of observation, like walking on the beach, showing the internal contradictions about a place where nostalgia, global political crises, and the escapist needs of the traveler mix. At the same time, the series is a wanderer´s attempt to understand why I am on a beach holiday, and what is my role here. My thesis includes visual and written parts. The visual part consists of the Broken Holiday Album photobook and the art exhibition named Off-season – broken dreams, which was held at Korjaamo gallery space during the summer of 2019. The exhibition documentation is included in the written part of the thesis. The Broken Holiday Album book is a separate entity and should not be considered an exhibition catalog. In the written part, I reflect on the memories that emerge from the holiday photos of family albums and their truthfulness. I also deal with the package travel culture and the effects of the seasonal thinking of tourism. I go through today’s traditions of travel photography, such as Instagram culture and taking selfies. The history of Northern Cyprus is referred to in the text as well as my experiences of a controversial holiday destination, and the future prospects of the tourism culture. In the written part, I also consider holiday destinations as a stage of the mind, and included in the text, there are also excerpts from my travel diary.Description
