Abstract

There are various forces at play in proximity systems, each acting within different ranges. As the distance between objects decreases, parasitic forces come into effect. Parasite forces include other forces acting at close-range, influencing the result of the measured force. One of these parasite forces arises from patch potentials on a conducting surface, resulting in electrostatic forces between two surfaces. The magnitude of patch force depends on the material and the geometry of the surfaces. Patch forces are well-known in normal states, however, their behavior in superconducting structures is less understood. Despite this, patch forces still act on superconducting surfaces, affecting the accuracy of force measurements. To better understand the behavior of patches in superconductors, the distribution of patch potentials is being studied to determine the magnitude of the force in superconducting structures. As a result the influence of patch forces can be reduced from the measurements allowing more accurate measurements of proximity forces. The motive behind this thesis is to perform the preparations for the determination of the effect of patch forces in superconducting surfaces. For this, an atomic force microscope is modified to function as a Kelvin probe force microscope. This is then later used by the host group to perform the same modifications to a cryogenic atomic force microscope, enabling the study of patch potential distributions in a superconducting state. To validate the correct modifications, measurements are first performed in normal state on an aluminum sample to determine if the modified microscope can measure patch potentials. The modified Kelvin probe force microscope performs as expected, successfully measuring patch potentials on the surface of the sample.

Kuitenkin niiden käyttäytyminen suprajohteissa on vähemmän ymmärretty. Tästä huolimatta tilkkuvoimat esiintyvät suorajohteissa vaikuttaen voimamittausten tarkkuuksiin. Jotta tilkkujen vaikutusta ymmärrettäisiin paremmin, niiden jakaumaa täytyy tutkia, milloin saadaan lisätietoa voiman suuruudesta suprajohteissa. Tämän tuloksena pystytään vähentämään tilkkuvoimien vaikutusta mittaustuloksissa, mikä mahdollistaa lähietäisyysvoimien tarkemmat mittaukset. Tässä työssä tehdiin valmistelut tilkkuvoimien löytämistä varten suprajohteissa. Tätä varten atomivoimamikroskooppi muutetaan toimimaan Kelvin-anturivoima-mikroskooppina. Tätä käytetään myöhemmin tutkimusryhmässä muuttamaan kryogeeninen atomivoimamikroskooppi samalla tavalla. Tämä mahdollistaa tilkkupotentiaalien tutkimisen suprajohteissa. Jotta voidaan varmistaa, että muutokset ovat oikein, mittaukset suoritetaan ensin normaalissa tilassa alumiininäytteelle, milloin voidaan huomata pystyykö muutettu mikroskooppi määrittämään tilkkupotentiaaleja. Tuloksista huomataan, että muutettu Kelvin-anturivoimamikroskooppi toimii kuten oletettiin määrittäen onnistuneesti tilkkupotentiaalit näytteen pinnalla.
