Abstract

Oscillatory gamma-band activity (GBA) occurring at 30 - 100 Hz has been attributed to cognitive processing. Evidence to the contrary suggests that induced high-frequency oscillations in the gamma-band EEG are merely artifacts of saccadic eye movement or muscular activity. This study aimed to review signal processing methods suitable for attenuating saccadic artifacts in EEG data collected from musically trained children and control subjects. With proper pre-processing, induced auditory GBA responses were found in each age group. These responses show a pattern consistent with prior research. More specifically, the frequency and spectral power of the induced gamma-band response appear to be influenced by musical training. The conclusions of this study support the role of induced GBA in higher level cognitive processing.
