Abstract

Stone Town, the historic heart of Zanzibar City, stands as a testament to centuries of cultural interaction between Swahili, Arab, Indian, and European influences. Its vibrant urban fabric reflects a rich legacy of resilience and change, yet today, rapid urbanisation, tourism pressures, and climate change pose significant threats to both its tangible and intangible heritage. This book is the outcome of a project carried out during the five-month intensive WiT (World in Transition) Programme, a professional diploma course hosted by the Aalto WiTLAB in spring 2024. Through narratives and observations collected in the field, it delves into the daily lives, memories, and aspirations of Stone Town’s local community. By exploring their perceptions of Stone Town’s cultural and built heritage, the project highlights the challenges and opportunities for preserving its living heritage. Focusing on the intersection of past and future, this work provides new insights into the role of heritage conservation in empowering communities and fostering sustainable development in one of the world’s most distinctive urban environments.
