Abstract

The subject of this thesis is to study a maritime emergency called person overboard. In this emergency, a person has fallen overboard from a vessel and must be recovered by performing a rescue turn maneuver to navigate the vessel back to the victim and to rescue them from the water. The goal in this thesis is to design a programme that assists the crew in the person overboard emergency by calculating the rescue turn maneuver. The operator will be provided with user-assisting information such as the control input to execute the rescue turn to aid in completing the rescue mission. Furthermore, the programme gives the trajectory of the simulated maneuver which can be shown on the vessel’s chart display device. In literature, there are doctrines for executing the rescue turn, however, as they are only generalizations, these procedures are not guaranteed to be successful for every vessel type. In this work, the rescue maneuver is described as a nonlinear optimization problem, in which the vessel's specific dynamics are taken into account. The problem is approached by simulating the vessel’s response to a given control input with respect to the vessel’s specific dynamics and solving the resulting nonlinear programming problem. This gives base to an optimal control problem in which the goal is to design such a control that the vessel is brought in minimal time to a target location with respect to the vessel dynamics and constraints. The work is aimed to be general in the sense that it is applicable to most large ships and to test the calculations, simulations are conducted on three different vessels that are each from common categories of large vessels: cruise ship, container ship and tanker. In this thesis, the work is still a prototype of the person overboard programme and the results will be tested solely by simulations. Testing the programme's performance in practice is part of the future work of the project and beyond the scope of this thesis.

Diplomityön aiheena on tutkia merenkäynnissä sattuvaa tapaturmatilannetta, jossa laivan matkustaja on pudonnut yli laidan. Kyseisessä onnettomuudessa henkilö on pudonnut veteen laivasta ja hänet tulee pelastaa suorittamalla pelastusmanööveri, jolla alus tuodaan takaisin uhrin luokse. Työn tavoitteena on suunnitella ohjelma, joka auttaa miehistöä pelastustehtävän suorittamisessa laskemalla pelastusreitin laivalle. Ohjelma tarjoaa käyttäjäavusteista informaatiota, kuten lasketun pelastusreitin simuloidut ohjauskomennot sekä trajektorin. Kirjallisuudessa on mainittu erilaisia malliesimerkkejä pelastusmanööverin toteuttamiseen, mutta ne ovat kuitenkin yleistyksiä, eivätkä aina käytännössä tuota haluttua lopputulosta kyseisellä laivalla. Pelastusreitin suunnittelu on tässä työssä kuvattu epälineaarisena optimointitehtävänä, jossa kyseisen laivan dynamiikka otetaan huomioon. Ongelmaa lähestytään simuloimalla laivan vastetta eri ohjauskomentoihin, mikä johtaa ongelman määrittelyyn epälineaarisena optimisäätönä. Optimointitehtävä muodostuu laivan dynamiikkaa ja pelastusreittiä koskevista rajaehdoista sekä navigointiin kulutetun ajan minimoinnista. Työn tavoitteena on olla yleistettävissä siten että ohjelma kykenee laskemaan pelastusreitin suurille kaupallisille aluksille, kuten risteilijöille, konttilaivoille ja tankkereille. Tulosten testaamisessa ohjelman toimivuutta arvioidaan näiden kolmen laivatyypin avulla. Tämän diplomityön kirjoittamisen aikana työ on vielä kehitysvaiheessa, joten tulosten tarkastelu rajoittuu ainoastaan tietokonesimulointiin ja ohjelman testaaminen käytännössä jää osaksi tulevaisuuden suunnitelmia.
