Abstract

The purpose of this thesis was to improve demand management at a company that manufactures prefabricated wooden elements. The goal of improving demand management was to ensure smooth run of operations and to enable rapid responses to changes in customer demand. As the purpose was to find a solution to a practical problem, a constructive research approach was selected. A literature review was first conducted to gather information on the demand management requirements and best practices in build-to-order manufacturing. The current situation and the specific needs of the case company were then studied. This was done by analyzing data covering more than ten years of sales and manufacturing operations. Contingent and rescheduled orders and their impact on manufacturing planning were given particular attention. Furthermore, interviews with the stakeholders were conducted to gain insight into the shortcomings of the current demand management process. Based on the analysis, three recommendations were made: 1. Data on the bids made by the company's sales force should be stored centrally, and analyzed in order to improve sales forecasting and manufacturing planning. 2. Bid pricing should be supported by the use of customized-bid-pricing models based on actual previous data. 3. A midrange sales forecast based on previous sales, interest rate and consumer confidence indicator should be introduced to increase the company's responsiveness to changes in demand. Finally, the thesis identifies the initial requirements specification for an information system needed to implement the changes.

Tämän diplomityön tavoitteena oli kysynnän hallinnan kehittäminen yrityksessä, joka valmistaa puisia suurelementtejä ja niistä rakentuvia talopaketteja. Kehittämishankkeen tärkein tavoite oli tuotannolle aiheutuvien häiriöiden ja tuotantokatkosten vähentäminen. Muita tavoitteita olivat tuotantokapasiteetin tehokas hyödyntäminen erityisesti sesonkiaikoina sekä tuotannon suunnittelun helpottaminen kysyntäennusteen avulla. Käytetty tutkimusote oli konstruktiivinen. Tutkimuksen pääpaino oli siten uuden ratkaisun kehittämisessä käytännön ongelmaan. Aihetta taustoitettiin ensin kirjallisuustutkimuksella. Tämän jälkeen kysynnän hallinnan muutostarpeet kartoitettiin analysoimalla yrityksen toiminnanohjausjärjestelmään tallennettua historiatietoa ja haastattelemalla yrityksen henkilöstöä. Kerättyjen tietojen ja aihepiiristä muodostetun ymmärryksen pohjalta laadittiin ehdotukset kysynnän hallinnan kehittämiseksi. Työssä esitettiin kolme muutosehdotusta kysynnän hallinnan kehittämiseksi. Tärkein muutosehdotuksista oli tarjousten tietojen tallentaminen ja analysointi kysynnän ennustamista ja toiminnan suunnittelua varten. Lisäksi ehdotettiin räätälöityä tarjoushinnoittelua tukevan todennäköisyysmallin käyttöönottoa. Viimeisenä muutosehdotuksena esitettiin rullaavasti eteenpäin laadittavan kysyntäennusteen käyttöönottamista. Lopuksi työssä esitettiin alustava määrittely tietojärjestelmälle, joka tukisi ehdotettuja muutoksia.
