Abstract
Typostitch 23 –lopputyö koostuu kolmesta osasta: 27 ristipistotyöstä, typostitch.com –blogista (kirjoitettu englanniksi)sekä projektin kirjallisesta raportista (suomeksi). Ristipistotyöt on tehty New Yorkin Modernin Taiteen Museon, MoMan kokoelmiin tammikuussa 2011 hankituilla 23 digitaalisella kirjaintyypillä.
Työn lähtökohta on henkilökohtainen ja painopiste taiteellinen. Halusin oppia uuden taidon ja syventää jotain graafisen suunnittelun osa-aluetta. Perusajatus on digitaalisen kirjaintyypin kääntäminen ristipistoiksi.
Typostitch 23 contains 3 parts: 27 letters or symbols cross stitched (an exhibition), typostitch.com -blog (in English) and a written report of the project (in Finnish). The cross stiched works are executed with the 23 digital typefaces that Museum of Modern Art bought to its collections in January 2011.
The basis of the work is personal and the focus artistic. I wanted to learn a new skill and get a chance to dig deeper into a specific field of graphic design, typography. The basic idea is to translate digital typeface as cross stitched. Typostitch 23 -project seeks answer to the questions: is it possible to tell something of the typeface with cross stitching? Do cross stitching and typeface design have something in common? A single letter or a symbol is set under examination as a form. At the same time this work - like the MoMa's collection - wants to remind that type design is a part of the design field.
Part of this project is a blog, typostitch.com, written in English. The blog started in January 2013. I have written the history and background of the typefaces, but also sometimes of my own cross stitching work. The 23 MoMa's digital collection typeface have been created to several purpose and needs from different basis. Some of them are designed as answers to changes in technology, some reflect the cultural history and zeitgeist, some have strong historical roots. Typostitch.com tells the stories behind these typefaces and explains the charasteristics of the font. To represent the typeface I have chosen either a single character, mark or the alphabet, in one work (FF Din) there are numbers. I have designed a cross stitched work with the font and then stitched it.
The method is the history of typography combined with artistic research method. As a result there should be a work that could tell something essential of the typeface.
The deduction however is that cross stitching and type design have connection, but it is not the one, that I expected it would be. There is a connection between a pixel and a stitch, but it is the same as with any gridbased form. But when a letter/symbol is translated as cross stitched it is probable that the viewer can divide the form and the sound of the letter. The more relevant connecting factor is the "craftmanship" attitude. This attitude causes the satisfaction of the working itself, especially when the worker/designer/artist is in the flow. The extrabonus is that you can be proud of what you've done.
