Abstract
This thesis examines if and how bidding behaviour in sealed-bid first- and secondprice auctions deviates from standard game-theoretic predictions. The thesis focuses on independent private-value auctions under the assumptions commonly used in auction theory. It first outlines the conceptual framework necessary for understanding equilibrium predictions. Using that knowledge, theoretical benchmarks for first- and second-price auction bidding behaviour is derived and the revenue equivalence theorem is briefly presented. Predictions show bid shading in first-price auctions and truthful bidding in second price auctions. The literature review shows that observed behaviour consistently differs from Nash equilibrium bids. In first-price auctions, overbidding relative to the risk-neutral equilibrium benchmark is persistent even though bids seem to remain below bidders’ true valuations. In second-price auctions, the finding is that truthful bidding is consistently violated, with overbidding being common. The revenue equivalence theorem seems to often fail in observed settings. The thesis continues by discussing possible explanations for these observations. Literature findings indicate that no single explanation is sufficient on its own. Risk aversion provides partial explanations for first-price auctions. Behavioural explanations, such as regret and spite, bounded rationality, probability misperception, and feedback and experience appear to be relevant in explaining deviations. Observed deviations seem to be systematic and persistent, and the gap between theory and practice is best understood to result from several factors.
Korkeimman hinnan huutokaupoissa ylihinnoittelu on tyypillistä. Riskin välttäminen on mahdollinen selitys etenkin korkeimman hinnan huutokaupoille. Tutkielmassa tarkastellaan myös käyttäytymiseen liittyviä tekijöitä, kuten katumusta, rajallista rationaalisuutta, tilanteen väärinymmärtämistä sekä kokemusta. Lopputuloksena todetaan teorian ja käytännön välisen eron johtuvan useista tekijöistä.
