Abstract

In this master’s thesis the design guidelines of European and US standards for concentrically braced steel frames subjected to seismic loads were evaluated and compared. Standards provide design procedures for the complex issues of structural response to the dynamic excitation produced by earthquakes. The European standard Eurocode 8-1 was compared to US standards AISC 341-16 and ASCE 7-16. The comparison consists of a theoretical part where the design rules were directly compared and a case study where building frames were studied by a FEM design program applying Eurocode 8-1 and the US standards. Utilization ratio of members are compared which will reveal deviating strength demands. If the frames did not meet the design rules, their design was updated. Major differences were observed between the standards in terms of demand for member-specific strength and location of stress concentrations in the building. Consequently, one standard may result in more slender braces but stockier columns and beams. This was observed in the example structure, where no common profile size could be found to meet the requirements of both standards. Regarding over-strength and capacity design of non-dissipative members, the standards have differences in ensuring elastic behavior of these members, which led to significant differences in the case study. The extensive requirements of the capacity design in the US standards resulted in more consistent strength demands over the non-dissipative members of the seismic force-resistant frames. Consequently, a structure that meets the requirements of the European standard may not satisfy the design rules of the other.

I detta diplomarbete jämfördes europeiska och amerikanska standardiserade tillvägagångssätt för dimensionering av stagade stålramar utsatta för jordbävningslaster. Standarderna innehåller dimensioneringsmetoder för ett komplext problem, strukturers respons till dynamiska excitationer förorsakade av jordbävningar. Europeiska standarden Eurokod 8-1 jämfördes med Amerikanska standarderna AISC 341-16 och ASCE 7-16. Jämförelsen består av en teoretisk del med direkta jämförelser mellan standarderna och en fallstudie där stålramar jämfördes i ett FEM program som tillämpar standarderna Eurokod 8-1 och AISC 341-16. I resultaten jämförs utnyttjandegraderna, vilka avslöjar skillnader i hållfasthetskrav mellan standarderna. Ramarna uppdaterades ifall delar inte uppfyllde kraven i något av standarderna. Stora skillnader observerades mellan standarderna gällande hållfasthetskrav för individuella element och i kraftfördelningen inom ramarna. Som en konsekvens av detta kan en standard leda till slankare stag men kraftigare pelare och balkar. Det här observerades i exempelstrukturen där ingen ram-konfiguration som uppfyllde kraven i båda standarderna hittades. Standarderna har vissa olikheter i tillvägagångssätt för att säkerställa elastisk respons hos icke-dissipativa element, vilket ledde till skillnader i resultaten i fallstudien. De omfattande dimensioneringskraven gällande förhållande i kapacitet mellan dissipativa och icke-dissipativa element i de amerikanska standarderna resulterade i en jämnare fördelning av hållfasthetskrav i pelare och balkar. Detta innebär att kraven i de amerikanska standarderna nödvändigtvis inte uppfylls för en struktur som uppfyller kraven i europeiska standarden.
