Abstract

The main objective of this thesis is to explain differences in generated revenues between the English Premier League teams utilizing empirical methods. The scope of this research is the seasons from 2007/2008 to 2017/2018, and a total of 35 individual teams are observed. Previous studies are examined and compared to the findings of this thesis. Three regression models are conducted based on the gathered data with multiple quantitative variables. A fixed effects model was selected to represent the data based on a number of tests. Four of the used variables appeared to be statistically significant. Further analysis and previous research suggested that the English Premier League is highly imbalanced in terms of competitiveness. Hereby, sporting performance did not appear to be a prominent factor when considering the generated revenue. Instead, historical success, and average wealth of the area proved out to be more important factors. When comparing these achieved results to previous research, similarities can be seen. However, some differences appeared in areas such as sporting performance and the impact of foreign players. The results can overall be considered satisfactory, but some limitations in data and the used methods occurred. For instance, the nature of the dataset creates difficulties for accurate estimations due to serial correlation. Thus, further research should be conducted to achieve a deeper understanding of revenue generating in the English Premier League.
