Abstract

This Master's Thesis is made for the UPM-Kymmene Oyj owned Tervasaari paper mill's paper machine number eight (PK8), which produces high quality SCK-and glassine type label base papers. Label base paper's raw material consists of birch and pine market pulps and addition to these pulp produced in Tervasaari's own integrate pulp mill, which pulp type changed from Semi Alkaline Pulp (SAP) to Tervasaari Bleached Sulphate pulp (TBSA). The aim of this Master's Thesis was to optimize the product quality and production capacity of PK8 so that Tervasaari integrate pulp can be used at least the target amount. In the literature part there was examined the structure and quality criteria of label laminates and label base paper, general fiber properties and factors affecting the strength of fiber network and different strength properties of paper. In addition to these there were examined different retention mechanisms and pulp properties and the chemistry of hydrophobic sizing with ASA and papermaker's alum. There were identified two main problematic issues regarding the usage of TBSA. The first was the so called brittle paper problem where the paper felt tangibly fragile and brittle. This caused web brakes in different parts of production line. The second problematic issue was the decline of the hydrophobic sizing results as the drive cycle advanced. The experimental part consists of laboratory tests and factory scale trials at PK8. In the laboratory tests there was examined the pH-buffering ability of different pulps, of which conclusions could be made of electrostatic properties of different pulps. In the second laboratory test series, the so called strain drying experiment (VKK)' there was examined the effect of different pulps and their refining levels and strains induced during drying to strength properties of paper and paper brittleness. The aim of the factory scale trials was to verify the results of laboratory tests, especially the strain drying experiment, in the factory conditions, to find the optimal refining treatment mode and level for TBSA and to examine the effect of strains between different drive groups to paper quality. In addition to these the target of factory scale trials was to produce good paper quality with good production speed when TBSA-ratio is over the target ratio. In the executed laboratory and factory scale trials there was the following observations made. The paper brittleness problem was mainly caused by the high level of pine sawmill chips as the raw material of TBSA combined with low refining level of approximately 130 kWh/tn and sufficiently high TBSA-ratio. Paper brittleness was not be able to generate when pine sawmill chip level was lower and the refining level of TBSA was markedly higher, 250 kWh/tn. The diminishing of the stretches between the first two drive groups of the drying section of paper machine affected paper quality positively, especially the Gurley-and Bekk-porosities and Scott Bond increased. The decline of the hydrophobic sizing results as the drive cycle advanced was discovered to at least partly originate from the increase of conductivity of circulation waters. The increase of conductivity is caused by different chemical dosages, especially sodium hydroxide and alum, when sodium and sulphate ions concentrate in the circulation waters. The increase of conductivity weakens the electrostatic interactions between particles and also weakens the retention of ASA-size. The replacing of the circulation waters with fresh water and diminishing the dosages of sodium hydroxide and alum decreased conductivity and improved the sizing result of the backside of paper.

Tämä diplomityö on tehty UPM-Kymmene Oyj:n omistaman Tervasaaren paperitehtaan paperikone kahdeksalle (PKS), joka tuottaa korkealaatuisia SCK- ja glassiinityyppisiä tarran taustapapereita. Tarran taustapaperin raaka-aine koostuu osto koivu- ja mäntysellujen lisäksi Tervasaaren oman integraattisellutehtaan tuottamasta massasta, jonka kuidutustyyppi muuttui Semi Alkaline Pulp (SAP) massasta Tervasaari Bleached Sulphate (TBSA) massaksi. Diplomityön tavoitteena oli optimoida PKS:n tuotantolinjan laatu ja tuotantokapasiteetti siten, että Tervasaaren omaa integraattimassaa pystytään hyödyntämään vähintäänkin tavoite annostelumäärä. Kirjallisuusosassa tarkasteltiin tarralaminaatin ja tarran taustapaperin rakennetta ja laatukriteerejä, yleisiä kuituominaisuuksia ja kuituverkoston lujuuteen vaikuttavia tekijöitä sekä erilaisia paperista mitattavia lujuussuureita. Lisäksi kirjallisuusosassa tarkasteltiin erilaisia retentiomekanismeja ja massasulpusta mitattavia suureita sekä ASA-liimauksen ja alunan kemiaa. PKS:lla identifioitiin kaksi pääsiallista ongelmakohtaa liittyen TBSA:n käyttöön. Ensimmäinen oli ns. paperin hapertumisongelma, jossa paperi tuntui käsin kosketeltaessa haperolta, mistä aiheutui ratakatkoja eri prosessivaiheissa. Toinen ongelmakohta oli paperin hydrofobiliimaustuloksen heikkeneminen ajojakson edetessä. Kokeellinen osa koostuu sekä laboratoriokokeista, että tehdasmittakaavaisista koeajoista PKS:lla. Laboratoriokokeissa tutkittiin PK8:lIa käytettävien massojen puskurointikykyä, jonka perusteella voitiin tehdä johtopäätöksiä eri massakomponenttien sähköstaattisista ominaisuuksista. Toisessa laboratoriokoesarjassa, ns. vetokuivatuskokeissa (VKK), tutkittiin eri massakomponenttien ja niiden jauhatustasojen sekä kuivatuksen aikaisten venymien vaikutusta paperin lujuusominaisuuksiin ja paperin haperuuteen. Tehdasmittakaavaisten koeajojen tavoitteena oli todentaa laboratoriokokeiden, erityisesti vetokuivatuskokeiden, tuloksia tehdasolosuhteissa, löytää TBSA:lle optimaalinen jauhatuskäsittelytapa ja taso sekä tutkia kuivatusryhmien välisten vetoerojen vaikutusta paperin laatuun. Lisäksi tavoitteena oli onnistuneesti ajaa hyvää paperilaatua hyvällä tuotantonopeudella TBSA-annostelusuhteen ollessa yli tavoitetason. Suoritetuissa laboratoriokokeissa sekä tehdasmittakaavaisissa koeajoissa tehtiin seuraavia pääasiallisia havaintoja. Paperin haperuusongelma johtui TBSA-massan raaka-aineena käytetyn mäntysahahakkeen korkeasta osuudesta yhdistettynä alhaiseen 130 kWh/tn jauhatuskäsittelyyn sekä riittävän suureen TBSA-massan osuuteen. Paperin haperuutta ei saatu aikaiseksi aikana, jolloin TBSA:n raaka-aineena käytettiin vähäisempää määrää mäntysahahaketta ja jauhatustaso oli selvästi suurempi, 250 kWh/tn. Paperikoneen alkukuivatusosan kahden ensimmäisen käyttöryhmän välisten vetoerojen pienentäminen vaikutti positiivisesti paperin laatuun, erityisesti Gurley- ja Bekk-huokoisuudet ja palstautumislujuus kasvoivat. Hydrofobiliimaustuloksen heikkenemisen ajojakson edetessä todettiin ainakin osittain johtuvan kiertovesien johtokyvyn kasvusta. Johtokyvyn kasvu johtuu suurelta osin eri kemikaaliannosteluista, erityisesti lipeän ja alunan annosteluista, jolloin natrium- ja sulfaatti-ionit kertyvät kiertovesiin. Johtokyvyn kasvu heikentää sähköisiä vuorovaikutuksia ja täten ASA-liiman retentoitumista. Vesien vaihdon sekä lipeän ja alunan annosteluiden vähentäminen alensi kiertovesien johtokykyä ja paransi taustapuolen hydrofobiliimaustulosta.
