Abstract

Sustainability is an increasingly important topic in the Belgian electricity market. This thesis examines how sustainability is represented in the business models of energy companies in this market and more specifically focuses on the differences in value propositions. Several trends and underlying assumptions form the foundation of this research; these are examined in the literature review. This research focuses on the theoretical motivation behind sustainability in business, as well as the practical examples in Belgium. It can be concluded that this topic has had a growing impact on the businesses examined, especially in their marketing strategies. Furthermore, a distinction can be made between companies that have been historically present in the market, which are motivated by relational demands, businesses with international mother companies, which are mostly moved by instrumental motivators, and local newcomers, who have adapted sustainability into their whole business model because they are morally motivated. Although this can be viewed after some research, improvements in transparency are still necessary to create a full understanding for the Belgian consumer.
