Abstract

Despite the effort companies place in digital transformation, many companies still rely heavily on manual processes. One such process is order processing. Existing solutions for automating order processing are often tailored to specific systems and lack the flexibility to adapt to differing operational environments. Robotic Process Automation (RPA) is one possible solution, promising efficiency and agility at lower costs without changing the existing systems or processes. However, research on the practical implementation of RPA for order processing remains limited. This thesis studies the application of RPA to automate order processing. It examines the capabilities of RPA and related technologies (AI, OCR, machine learning), the challenges in RPA development as well as the different governance models for managing the technology. Through a case study, the thesis identifies specific challenges in implementing RPA for order processing. Finally, the thesis gives recommendations for implementing RPA in this context.

Monet yritykset nojaavat vahvasti manuaalisiin prosesseihin digitalisaatiosta huolimatta. Hyvä esimerkki tällaisesta prosessista on tilausten käsittely. Nykyiset ratkaisut tilausten käsittelyn automatisoimiseksi ovat usein räätälöityjä tiettyihin järjestelmiin, eikä niissä ole tarpeeksi joustavuutta erilaisten toimintaympäristöjen tarpeisiin. Ohjelmistorobotiikka (RPA) tarjoaa mahdollisen ratkaisun, luvaten tehokkuutta ja ketteryyttä alhaisemmilla kustannuksilla tekemättä muutoksia olemassaoleviin järjestelmiin tai prosesseihin. Käytännön tutkimus RPA:n soveltamisesta tilausten käsittelyyn on kuitenkin edelleen vähäistä. Tämä tutkielma tutkii RPA:n käyttöä tilausten käsittelyn automatisoinnissa. Se tarkastelee RPA:n ja siihen liittyvien teknologioiden (tekoäly, OCR, koneoppiminen) kyvykkyyksiä, RPA-kehityksen haasteita sekä erilaisia hallintomalleja. Kirjallisuuskatsauksen ja tapaustutkimuksen avulla tutkielma tunnistaa tilauskäsittelyn haasteita RPA:n näkökulmasta ja antaa suosituksia RPA:n käyttöönottoon.
