Abstract

Alternative housing for the elderly is located inbetween the traditional service housing and the housing in its ordinary meaning. The main constructional differences include the appartment size and the character of social space. In addition to the constructed environment, the conditions in housing production involve major changes. The effects of housing policy, financing and administration may not be underestimated. The issue on housing for elderly is very update and crucial in economical respect. The architectural solution which will be presented is a portion of a broader concept. The emphasis relies on the full scale enforcement as a part of the official housing policy. The quality of life increases if the elderly is able to stay at home even in weakened state of health. Achieving reductions in state social costs is also a important aspect.

Vanhusasumisen vaihtoehtona on perinteisen palvelutalon ja tavanomaiseksi koetun asumisen väliin sijoittuva ratkaisu. Tärkeimpinä eroavuuksina ovat asuntojen pinta-ala ja yhteistilojen luonne. Rakennetun ympäristön lisäksi muutoksen kohteina ovat asuntojen tuotanto-olosuhteet. Asuntopolitiikan, rahoituksen ja hallinnon ratkaisujen ohjaavaa vaikutusta on vaikea sivuuttaa. Vanhusten asuminen on ajankohtainen ja voimavaroja sitova kysymys. Vanhusasumisen osaratkaisuna Katajanokalle sijoittuva ehdotus on pala koko yhteiskuntaa kattavasta järjestelmästä. Laaja-alaisena asuntopolitiikan osana sillä on yhteiskunnan kustannuksia keventävä vaikutus. Vanhukset voivat asua omassa kodissaan pidempään, mahdollisesti koko elämänsä, ilman laitosmaista hoitoa.
