Abstract

This master's thesis considers the development of a new residential area on the island of Lövö in Helsinki. I wanted to create an alternative to the proposed plan that was under development by the City Planning Department of Helsinki. My main idea was to create a plan that better satisfies the wishes of the inhabitants concerning the expansion development plan of the area. I started by choosing an unbuilt 1.1 hectare large area, in the northern central parts of the island. I divided the area into two residential districts. On the larger district I planned six multi-storey buildings with six apartments each. The average area of the flats was 86 m2. On the other residential district I planned two row houses containing three apartments each. These apartments had an average area of 163 m2. The building placement on the site followed the same principles as with the existing buildings. The freely distributed buildings follow the contour of the terrain, and take the surrounding areas into consideration. In accordance with the original city plan I created green corridors between the buildings and provided for unobstructed views from, and through, the residential districts. The designs of the buildings and the materials used have their roots in modem Finnish architecture. The same goes for the design of the floor plans of the apartments. The main goal here was to design basic, well functioning apartments that meet the living requirements of today.
