Abstract

Taiteen maisterin opinnäytetyö Maiseman elementit 1–9... ja Krakus Mound on esseepohjainen taiteellinen tutkimus tekijän oman taiteellisen työskentelyn eri vaiheista, josta syntyi näyttelykokonaisuus maalauksista, piirustuksista ja veistoksista. Kokonaisuus on henkilökohtainen kuvaus taiteellisen prosessin etenemisestä, jossa tekijä etsii omaa tapaansa jäsentää ajatteluaan ja perusteita tekemilleen taiteellisille valinnoilleen. Se on lähtenyt kysymyksistä, joissa on pohdittu, minkälainen ajatusprosessi valmiin teossarjan takana on, ja minkälaisista elementeistä se koostuu. Teoreettisen osuuden lisäksi kysymyksiin on haettu vastausta intuitiivisesta taiteen tekemisestä, jossa havaintoja on tehty prosessin aikana sekä sen jälkeen. Opinnäyte etenee kronologisesti alkaen Tuomas Nelimarkan maalauksen esittelystä, joka toimii teossarjan innoituksen alkupisteenä. Sen jälkeen opinnäyte esittelee taiteellista tutkimusta kappaleittain, jotka on jaettu oleellisimpiin poimintoihin tekijän taiteellisesta tekemisestä. Valintoja on havainnollistettu luonnoksilla, päiväkirjamerkinnöillä ja referenssikuvilla. Yksittäiset kappaleet voi nähdä piirrosten elementteinä ja opinnäytteen valmiina teoksena. Pohdintaa tukee myös eri taitelijoiden kirjoittama kirjallisuus taiteellisesta prosessista, väriteoriasta, sommitelmasta, materialistisuudesta ja tekemisestä itsestään. Kyseinen kirjallisuus on valikoitunut tukemaan opinnäytetyötä sen perusteella, että ne ovat tarjonneet vahvistusta ja kriittistä pohdintaa tekijän havainnoille omasta taiteellisesta työskentelystään sekä omaan tapaan ajatella. Lopussa kokonaisuus tiivistyy valmiiden teosten reflektointiin ja ajatuksiin näyttelyn rakentamisesta. Itse näyttely pidettiin Aalto-yliopiston Väreen V1-galleriassa 15–27.05.2023. Tavoitteena oli tutkia ja löytää kieli omalle taiteelliselle työskentelylle, sekä ymmärtää millaiseen teoreettiseen ja käytännölliseen maastoon oma tekeminen sijoittuu. Opinnäyteprosessi synnytti uusia ajattelu- ja jäsennystapoja omaan taiteelliseen työskentelyyn ja tutkimiseen. Oma ymmärrys siitä, mistä ajatukset tulevat selkeni, mikä vahvisti motivaatiota taiteen tekemisen jatkamiselle. Opinnäyte loi pohjan, jonka päälle on hyvä rakentaa jotain uutta.

The thesis Elements of a Landscape 1–9... and Krakus Mound (Maiseman elementit 1–9... ja Krakus Mound) is an artistic research based on different stages of the author's artistic practice that is written in essay form. The process created an exhibition that included paintings, drawings and sculptures. It shows a personal progression in artistic process where the author searches her own way to analyze her thinking and explain her artistic choices. The thesis started from questions that asked what kind of thinking-process is behind final art works and what kind of elements have been used. Besides the theoretical part, answers were looked from the intuitive art making process where observations were made during and after the process. The thesis moves forward in chronological order starting from an introduction of a painting by Tuomas Nelimarkka. The painting has been the starting point of the first ideas. After that, the thesis explains author's artistic practice chapter by chapter which has been divided into the most relevant elements of the process. The choices have been illustrated by sketches, diary notes and reference pictures. Single chapters can be seen as elements of a drawing and the thesis itself as the final drawing. The thoughts are also supported by literature written by different artists about the artistic process, color theory, composition, materialism and making itself. The literature in question has been selected to support the thesis since they have offered confirmation and critical reflection to the author's observations about his own artistic work and his own way of thinking. In the end, the author reflects these ideas on the final art works and to ideas of building the exhibition. The exhibition was held at Aalto University's Väre V1 gallery space in 15–27th of May 2023. The goal of the thesis was to explore and find a language to author' own artistic practice and to understand its context. The process generated new modes to think and analyze artistic practice and other was to study it. It also became clearer where author's own ideas come from which gave strong motivation to keep up with the practice. The thesis formed a good foundation on which to build something new.
