Earthbound Lovers

Abstract

This thesis is about Earthbound Lovers, a curatorial project and site-specific exhibition series curated by Iida Nissinen and Maikki Siuko. In this thesis we contextualise the two group exhibitions we organised in 2023, reflect on the project and deepen our understanding of the concepts, sites and paradigms that the project touches upon. We introduce the two exhibitions, (four softening edges, in the glimmer of green) and Xenoflora, and link the individual artworks to the exhibition concepts (nature relatedness, affect, ecogothic etc.) via description and analysis. We then revisit and deepen the overarching theoretical concepts that inform the Earthbound Lovers series, and reflect how these concepts materialised in the exhibitions on a more general level. Simultaneously, we outline how the two exhibitions took different approaches to the theoretical terrain that we navigate, and situate the exhibitions into the field of contemporary arts via examples of shows and artworks that discuss similar themes or concepts. We review the discourse that opens from the site-specificity and exhibiting in greenhouses and draft out some thoughts on curating, art and ecology in the era of ecological urgency. Finally, we briefly discuss our collaborative curatorial process in Earthbound Lovers.

Tämä opinnäytetyö käsittelee kuratoriaalista projektia ja paikkasidonnaista näyttelysarjaa nimeltä Earthbound Lovers, jota me, Iida Nissinen ja Maikki Siuko, kuratoimme. Tässä opinnäytetyössä kontekstualisoimme kahta vuonna 2023 järjestämäämme ryhmänäyttelyä, reflektoimme projektia sekä syvennämme ymmärrystä niistä käsitteistä, paikoista ja paradigmoista, joita projektimme koskee. Aluksi esittelemme näyttelyt (four softening edges, in the glimmer of green) ja Xenoflora, ja kuvaamme, reflektoimme ja analysoimme teoksia suhteessa näyttelykonsepteihin (luontosuhteet, affekti, ekogotiikka jne.). Tämän jälkeen syvennämme Earthbound Lovers –sarjan näyttelykonsepteihin liittyvää teoriaa ja pohdimme, kuinka nämä käsitteet toteutuivat näyttelyissä yleisemmällä tasolla. Samalla hahmotamme, miten kaksi näyttelyämme paikantuvat relevantin teorian ja nykytaiteen kentälle. Tarkastelemme myös paikkasidonnaisuutta sekä kasvihuoneita näyttelytilana, sekä hahmotamme ajatteluamme kuratoinnista, taiteesta ja ekologiasta ympäristökriisin aikakaudella. Lopuksi keskustelemme lyhyesti yhteisestä kuratointiprosessistamme Earthbound Lovers projektissa.
