Abstract
This research explores the augmentation of the bandoneon, an iconic Argentine instrument traditionally associated with tango music, through the integration of live electronics and extended performance techniques. The research delves into the development of a unique system that enables real-time interaction between the performer and the electronics, transforming the bandoneon into a dynamic and expressive instrument. The study investigates the implications of this augmented approach on musical expression, embodiment, and the relationship between the per- former and the instrument. Through a series of performances, including collaborations with other musicians and participation in festivals, the thesis examines the practical application and reception of the augmented bandoneon in diverse contexts. The findings contribute to the discourse on the intersection of traditional instruments, technology, and contemporary musical practices, offering insights into the possibilities and challenges of augmenting a culturally significant instrument like the bandoneon. Embedded in the traditional realm of Argentine tango, the bandoneon carries a storied legacy. This study emerges from a desire to transcend established boundaries and integrate the instrument into the contemporary landscape. By utilising machine learning and unique playing techniques, the aim is to unlock new dimensions of artistic expression within the bandoneon. This research adopts a practice-based methodology, with the artist immersing herself in solo and collaborative performances across diverse musical contexts. The integration of machine learning algorithms for live-electronics, coupled with the development and application of extended playing techniques, forms the core of the experimental process. Documentation occurs through meticulous practice journals, audio-visual recordings, and reflective insights. The research encourages musicians and sound artists to embark on similar explorations, pushing the boundaries of traditional instruments through technological integration. It advocates for continued interdisciplinary collaborations, inspiring collective contributions to the ever-evolving realm of contemporary music. In essence, "Bandoneon Explorations" adds a new chapter to the ongoing narrative of traditional instruments embracing the possibilities offered by machine learning and extended techniques, illuminating potential avenues for musicians navigating the intersection of tradition and innovation.
