Abstract
This thesis follows the process of designing and making of 5 woven garments, where the garments and textiles have been designed together. The aim of this thesis is to show how taking a simultaneous design approach while designing textiles and garments can lead to innovative shapes and silhouettes while utilizing the material properties of the textiles. Specifically, how textile thinking can be used to deepen creative expression and material appreciation in the process of garment making. Two methods have been used to conduct this research, literature review and practice led research. The literature review method explored the role of textiles in fashion design and defines different approaches; garment-led, textile-led and simultaneous. A focus was placed on the simultaneous design approach, as it was the approach taken in the practice led section of the thesis. The practice led research was conducted through the process of simultaneously designing and making the garments and woven fabrics where the primary method used was draping on a mannequin. The design process is explained through text and imagery, illustrating the process at all stages. From a personal artistic concept, designing the weaving structures, making garments and textile prototypes, and finally to making the garments. Through all this, an emphasis was put on the way each of the textile’s properties impacted the garment making and conversely the way the garments, their 3-dementionality, impacted the textile. This thesis offers an insight into an alternate design process where draping and the design of woven fabric structures are combined in creative exploration, offering a unique perspective on shape making within woven textilesDescription
