Abstract

This study presents how autonomy in agricultural robots has evolved over the years and what are its possible future directions. The study consists of a literature review regarding agricultural robots and an analysis. It includes scientific papers, robotics companies’ publications and textbooks. The main objective is to come to an under-standing regarding what methods and techniques are used to increase autonomy in agricultural robots and vehicles from their first intents to their modern counterparts and their future forms. It is discovered that early intents of autonomous agricultural vehicles date back to early 1900’s. These were purely mechanical systems with zero level of autonomy although they were driverless. Few decades later new technologies were investigated with no success. Early autonomous levels based on SAE J3016 were reached in around 1990’s when first vision based local navigation was invented. Combining other technologies such as GPS and LiDAR, agricultural robots and vehicle started to increase their autonomy. Agricultural robots started to evolve and focus on specific tasks such as weeding, fruit picking and pest control which broaden the use cases of autonomy. Driverless tractors and other agricultural robots and vehicles exist which can solve problems which come their way due the highly developed algorithms and artificial intelligence. Nowadays there exist several general and task specific autonomous agricultural robot solutions which are operational and robust. These autonomous robots rely on humans only in cases where they cannot solve the issue that their facing. Legislations and standards are yet to be established even though some laws and standards partially include agricultural robots. Although advances in autonomy have been made, full autonomy is yet to be reached. Agricultural robots still require human operators to solve surging challenges which the robots cannot solve on their own and to make sure that safety related concerns are managed. The same issues and obstacles are still present. New investments in agricultural robotics will be made in the future due the climate change and the issues it provokes. This will accelerate the development of autonomous agricultural robots and thus increase their level of autonomy.
