Abstract

The objective of this study was to research the activities of a Manufacturing Execution System (MES), and to investigate the benefits and challenges of a MES. Technical aspects related to the MES are also described. Finally, considerations of a MES implementation process are presented. In this thesis contents of the standard ISA-95 is examined and compared with the standard ISA-88. The ISA-95 standard defines MES activities and can be used as the basis for designing the data exchange with other systems. Also opportunities for applying the standard ISA-95 are discussed. This study defines MES as a system between an Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system and a shop floor control system. Even though ERP systems and control systems can communicate directly, a MES can fill needs for production control, which are usually detailed scheduling processes or shop floor documentation activities. A factory with production of variety of products with large volumes needs a MES to intensify its capacity usage and to improve management of the entire manufacturing processes. Implementing a MES instead of updating an entire ERP or control system is typically only a fraction of the cost. MESs are nowadays more common in process industries, where the production is usually fully automated.

Tämän diplomityön tavoitteena oli tutkia MES-järjestelmän toimintaa sekä MES-järjestelmän etuja ja haasteita. Myös MES-järjestelmään liittyvät tekniset näkökohdat esitetään. Lopuksi vielä käsitellään MES-järjestelmän käyttöönottoon liittyviä näkökantoja. Tässä työssä ISA-95 standardin sisältöä on esitelty ja verrattu standardiin ISA-88. ISA-95 standardi määrittelee MES-järjestelmän toimintaa ja sitä voidaan käyttää perustana suunniteltaessa tiedonsiirtoa toisille järjestelmille. Myös standardin ISA-95 soveltamismahdollisuuksia käsitellään. Tämä työ osoittaa, että MES on ERP- ja tuotannon tietojärjestelmän välissä. Vaikka ERP-tuotannon tietojärjestelmät voivat kommunikoida suoraan toisille, MES voi täyttää tuotannonohjaukseen tarpeita, jotka ovat yleensä tuotannon hienokuormitukseen ja lattiatason dokumentointiin liittyviä toimintoja. Tehdas, jolla on suuri volyymi sekä erilaisia tuotteilla tarvitsee MES-järjestelmää, joka tällöisin tehostaa kapasiteetin käyttöastetta ja parantaa koko valmistusprosessin hallintaa. MES-järjestelmän implementoinnin kustannus on yleensä vain murto-osa siitä, jos sen sijaan päivitettäisiin ERP- tai koko tuotannon tietojärjestelmää. MES-järjestelmät ovat nykyään yleisempiä prosessivalmistuksissa, jossa tuotanto on yleensä täysin automatisoitu.
