Abstract

This master thesis investigates how personal attachment in architecture can affect the individual’s view on caring for the built environment. The thesis explores an argument: the things we like we take care of, and the things we take care of last longer. It is an analysis which contributes to the field of architecture by providing the reader with a perspective on how we come to shape connections to our buildings and how this in turn creates a foundation for wanting to repair and maintain our environments. The thesis has a starting point in exploring artistic exercises to create autoethnographic research methods which together with three notions on finding meaning in architecture and a visit to the FIX: Care and Repair exhibition at he Museum of Finnish Architecture and the Design Museum (26.4.2024 – 5.1.2025) shape the main body of the thesis. The three notions: expression, personality traits, and memory triggers, are taken from the book The Architecture of Happiness (2006) by Alain de Botton. This discussion uses ideas from texts by Juhani Pallasmaa, Christopher Alexander, Peter Zumthor, Alvar Aalto, and Iida Kalakoski to explore how the three notions by de Botton come to affect our attitudes to maintenance and repair and how we see value in buildings and materials. The discussion includes analyses of paintings, sculpture, and furniture design which together with the autoethnographic research methods provide a better understanding on how art and architecture speak to us. The discussion explores themes such as how we perceive expression and how we want to express ourselves which in turn changes the value found in architecture, how we can find personality traits in materials and how these personality traits affect the value we see in the material, and how buildings evoke memories in us and can help us reconnect with ourselves, making us want to maintain these spaces.

 Med detta slutarbete undersöker jag hur vi skapar kopplingar till vår arkitektur i ett försök att bättre förstå och skapa en positiv attityd till våra byggnader. I arbetet undersöks ett argument: saker som vi värnar om tar vi hand om och det vi tar hand om håller längre. Med denna analys bidrar jag till arkitekturteorin genom att ge läsaren ett perspektiv på vilka faktorer som skapar emotionella kopplingar till våra byggnader och hur detta i sin tur skapar en grund för att vilja reparera och underhålla våra byggda miljöer. Utgångspunkten för arbetet ligger i att utforska konstnärliga övningar för att skapa autoetnografiska forskningsmetoder, vilka tillsammans med tre idéer om hur man finner mening i arkitektur och ett besök till utställningen FIX: Lappa och Laga på Arkitekturmuseet och Designmuseet (26.4.2024– 5.1.2025) utgör stommen för diplomarbetet. De tre koncepten: uttryck, personlighetsdrag och minnesutsöndrare är tagna från boken The Architecture of Happiness (2006) som är skriven av Alain de Botton. Diskussionen kring dessa koncept baserar sig på idéer från texter skrivna av Juhani Pallasmaa, Christopher Alexander, Peter Zumthor, Alvar Aalto och Iida Kalakoski för att ta reda på hur dessa tre koncept påverkar vår attityd till underhåll och reparation av vår arkitektur, samt hur och var vi ser värde i byggnader och material. Diskussionen omfattar även analys kring målningar, skulptur och möbeldesign som tillsammans med de autoetnografiska metoderna utforskar hur konst och arkitektur kommunicerar med oss. I arbetet utforskas teman så som hur vi tar emot uttryck samtidigt som vi också uttrycker oss själva och hur dessa uttryck inverkar på värdet av arkitekturen, hur vi kan se personlighetsdrag i form och hur dessa påverkar värderingen av material och byggnader och slutligen hur utrymmen kan väcka minnen i oss och hjälpa oss att återkoppla till oss själva så att vi vill värna om dessa.
