Abstract

This thesis explores the implications of English as Business Lingua Franca (BELF) on global organizations, focusing on its role in shaping organizational communication and culture. The study investigates how BELF serves as a common language for diverse groups of users within international business environments, enabling communication but also presenting unique challenges. Key areas of impact are inclusivity and exclusivity in the workplace, power dynamics between native and non-native speakers, and the emotional responses of employees to the language. The research highlights the duality of BELF as both a tool for global business integration, and a source of potential conflict and identity issues among employees. Through a literature review featuring practical examples from case companies, this thesis offers a comprehensive overview of the complexities and dynamics introduced by the adoption of BELF in multinational companies. The findings suggest that while BELF can enhance communication and operational efficiency across borders, it also requires careful consideration of linguistic diversity and its effects on employee relations and corporate culture. This thesis also highlights the need for further research into the topic.

Tämän tutkielman tarkoituksena on avata englantia kaupan yleiskielenä (BELF), ja sen vaikutuksia maailmanlaajuisiin organisaatioihin, keskittyen sen rooliin organisaatiokulttuurin sekä viestinnän muokkaajana. Tutkielma tarkastelee, miten BELF toimii yhteisenä kielenä moninaisille ryhmille kansainvälisissä liiketoimintaympäristöissä, helpottaen kommunikointia mutta tuoden samalla esiin ainutlaatuisia haasteita. Keskeisiä vaikutusalueita ovat inklusiivisuus ja eksklusiivisuus työpaikalla, valtasuhteet äidinkielenään englantia puhuvien sekä muiden välillä, sekä myös työntekijöiden tunteet ja kielen vaikutus niihin. Tutkimus korostaa BELF:in kaksijakoista roolia sekä globaalin liiketoiminnan integraation välineenä, että potentiaalisena konfliktin ja identiteettiongelmien lähteenä työntekijöiden keskuudessa.
