Abstract

Taiteen maisterin opinnäytteeni koostuu esseemuotoisesta tekstistä Kaukana tässä sekä samannimisestä valokuvakirjasta. Tekstissä pohdin ja pyrin lähestymään valokuvan paikan olemusta ja aina askeleen päässä häilyvää kuvaa. Käsittelen valokuvan paikkaa kuljeskelun kautta, kuvaus kävelystäni kulkee läpi tekstin polkuna, josta jatkan syventämään aiheita, mutta johon palaan aina takaisin. Tekstin kävely sijoittuu rannalle, joka on osa East Coast Park -nimistä aluetta Singaporessa, jossa asuin vuosina 2015–2018. Kävelyissäni etsin vieraasta paikasta itselleni tuttua ja tarkastelen tutussa piilevää kuulumattomuuden tunnetta. Tekstini rakenne ei ole kronologinen. Sitä rikkovat aiheita lähemmin tarkastelevat sivupolut sekä kuljeskeluni ulkopuolella jatkunut työskentelyprosessi, jonka kuvauksia olen sisällyttänyt tekstiini päivämäärämerkinnällä erotettuina, päiväkirjan otteita muistuttavina hyppyinä ajassa ja paikassa. Teksti on jaettu neljään osaan ja jokainen osa lähestyy kuvan paikkaa hieman eri näkökulmasta, lomittuen kuitenkin keskenään ja sekoittuen kuljeskeluun, joka jatkuu läpi koko työn. Ensimmäisessä osassa pohdin etäisyyttä kuvan erottamattomana osana. Toisessa osassa kävelen ja kuljeskelen, teen matkaa etäisyyttä lyhentääkseni ja katson horisonttia. Kolmannessa osassa tarkastelen aikaa, sen jälkiä paikassa ja erityisesti maassa, joka näyttäytyy lähes kuvankaltaisena. Neljännessä osassa epäilen paikan aitoutta, katselen sitä kuin teatterin illusorista näyttämöä, rakennettua ja lavastettua. Lähdekirjallisuuteni koostuu sekä filosofisesti että fyysisesti paikkaa tarkastelevista kirjoituksista. Vertaan omaa pohdintaani kuvan paikasta Jean-Luc Nancyn ajatukseen kuvasta erillisenä, tarkastelen maahan tiivistyneitä paikan merkityksiä geologian näkökulmasta ja jatkan paikan merkitysten käsittelyä japanilaisen filosofin Nishida Kitarōn teorian kautta. Valokuvakirjan kuvat ovat vuosilta 2017–2019. Ne ovat syntyneet osana kuljeskelua, josta tekstissä kirjoitan. Työskentelyprosessi alkoi siitä ja rannalta ja jatkui palattuani Suomeen keräämäni materiaalin työstämisenä. Kuva, oli sitten kyse maalauksesta, piirustuksesta tai valokuvasta, on aina etäällä, ei ihan tässä, mutta ei muuallakaan. Sen paikka on erityinen ja tuohon erityiseen outouteen ja sitä kohti kuljen tekstissäni.

My master's thesis consists of an essay-like text Far away here and a photo book of the same name. In the text, I ponder and try to approach the sense of place of a photograph and the photograph itself that keeps its distance, staying always one step away from reach. I approach the place of a photograph through walking, the description of the walk forms a path, from which I continue to deepen the subjects, but to which I always return. The walk in the text is located on a shore, which is part of East Coast Park in Singapore, where I lived between 2015–2018. In my walks, I look for the familiar in a strange place and examine the feeling of not belonging hidden in the familiar. The structure of my text is not chronological. Its linearity is broken by closer looks into the questions I contemplate and descriptions of the working process that continued outside the walks. I have included these descriptions into the text as journal-like notes, separated with date notes, which differ in place and time from the main text. The text is divided into four parts, and each part approaches the place of an image from a slightly different perspective, interweaving with each other and mixing with the walk that continues throughout the text. In the first part, I consider the distance as an inseparable part of the picture. The second part is about walking and wondering, in order to shorten the distance, and about looking at the horizon. In the third part, I examine time, the traces it leaves into places and especially into land and soil, which appears almost photographic. In the fourth part, I doubt the authenticity of the place. I look at it as an illusory stage of the theater, built and staged. My references in this text are from texts that approach place as a philosophical concept and also as a physical circumstance. I reflect my own thinking of place of an image to Jean-Luc Nancy’s concept of image as distinct, I consider the meanings condensed in land and soil through geology and continue to examine the meaning of place through the theory of logic of place from Japanese philosopher Nishida Kitarō. Images in the photobook are from 2017–2019. They were made as part of the walk I describe in my text. My process of working begun from that and continued as working with the materials I had collected from the walks once I returned to Finland. The image, whether it’s a drawing or a photograph, is always at a distance, not right here, but nowhere else either. Its place is of a specific kind and strange, and towards that strangeness I walk in my text.
