Abstract

This Master's thesis was written at the instigation of the Lahti Region Environment Service as a part of the Innovative Concept of Eco-accommodation approach in rural Regions: Public support policies for eco-investors (ICER) project. The purpose of the thesis was to determine how accommodation businesses can reduce their carbon footprint, as well as examine the opportunities for public sector funding of these operations. In the case-study section, the carbon footprint of a log cottage owned by Messilä Maailma Oy was calculated using a life cycle assessment. A 50 year life span was chosen for the examination. After the carbon footprint calculations, the carbon footprint was recalculated taking into account some of the operations that are discussed in the literature section. All the calculations were carried out with GaBi software and Excel. The inventory data was collected from Messilä Maailma Oy, various companies, literature and databases. The carbon footprint of the log cottage was 285 099.17 kg CO<sub>2</sub> -equivalent. Only 1 % occurs in the construction phase. The largest share of the carbon footprint was formed by energy consumption (67 %) and water consumption (23 %). The smallest share was formed by waste and transportation. While examining the operations to reduce the carbon footprint, the biggest reduction was calculated when all of the electricity was produced from renewable sources. According to the results of the examination, it is possible to significantly reduce the carbon footprint using the operations discussed in the thesis. Especially when electric heating is used and electricity is produced mainly from fossil fuels, it is easy and economical to reduce the carbon footprint by using green energy. However, switching to the green energy does not necessarily cut costs, whereas reducing consumption both reduces the carbon footprint and cut costs. When the investment costs of the operation are high, it is in most cases possible to procure financial support from the public sector.

Tämä diplomityö tehtiin Lahden seudun ympäristöpalveluiden toimeksiantona osana Innovative Concept of Eco-accommodation approach in rural Regions: Public support policies for eco-investors (lCER) -hanketta. Työn tavoitteena oli löytää majoitusyrityksille soveltuvia toimenpiteitä elinkaarenaikaisen hiilijalanjäljen pienentämiseksi. Lisäksi selvitettiin julkisen tuen mahdollisuuksia esitetyille toimenpiteille. Työn Case-osuudessa laskettiin Hollolassa sijaitsevan Messilä Maailma Oy:n hirsimökin elinkaaren aikainen hiilijalanjälki ilmastonlämpenemispotentiaalina ilmaistuna. Hirsimökin käyttöajaksi valittiin 50 vuotta. Tämän jälkeen tarkasteltiin laskennallisesti eräiden esitettyjen toimenpiteiden vaikutuksia hiilijalanjälkeen. Laskenta suoritettiin sekä GaBi-ohjelmistolla että Excelillä. Laskennan inventaaritiedot kerättiin Messilä Maailma Oy:ltä, eri yrityksiltä ja kirjallisuudesta. Lisäksi laskennassa käytettiin valmiita tietokantojen malleja. Tarkastellun hirsimökin elinkaaren aikaiseksi hiilijalanjäljeksi saatiin 285099,17 kg CO<sub>2</sub> -ekvivalenttia. Tästä rakentamisen osuus oli 1 %. Suurimman päästölähteet olivat sähkönkulutus 67 % ja vedenkulutus 23 %. Pienimmät osuudet aiheutuivat jätteistä ja kuljetuksista. Toimenpide-ehdotuksista eniten hiilijalanjälkeä pienensi ostosähkön vaihtaminen uusiutuvilla energialähteillä tuotettuun sähköön eli niin sanottuun vihreään sähköön. Työn perusteella voidaan todeta, että esitetyillä toimenpiteillä on mahdollista pienentää hirsimokin elinkaaren aikaista hiilijalanjälkeä. Erityisesti voidaan todeta, että majoitusyritys, jolla on käytössä sähkölämmitys ja jonka ostettu sähkö on tuotettu pääosin uusiutumattomista energialähteistä, pystyy vihreään sähköön vaihtamalla helposti ja edullisesti pienentämään hiilijalanjälkeään merkittävästi. Vaihto vihreään sähköön ei kuitenkaan välttämättä tuo yritykselle suoria taloudellisia saastoja. Sitä vastoin kulutuksen vähentäminen sekä pienentää hiilijalanjälkeä että tuo taloudellisia saastoja yritykselle. Useimpiin suurta investointia vaativiin toimenpiteisiin on mahdollista saada julkista avustusta.
