Abstract

MR-linac is a state-of-the-art image-guided radiation therapy application, which combines a linear accelerator with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanner. This combination allows simultaneous imaging and radiation therapy which helps deliver the radiation dose more precisely within the target region especially when treating body parts in constant movement. Ionizing radiation is guided to the patient through the MRI scanner's center area. To preserve the properties of the radiation beam, the radiation path should be free of electronics or other obstacles. Besides this, the radiation may cause electronics to fail. This sets new requirements for MRI-hardware design. One component needing redesigning is the quadrature body coil (QBC). The QBC is set out of tune, or detuned, if external receive coils are used with it. Detuning is done with 16 detune boards which are located very close to the radiation window. This is unfavorable for the reasons indicated above. To overcome the problems of the current detune method, four new detune methods had been invented. The purpose of this thesis is to investigate if the new detuning methods could replaced the current one. This is done by evaluating if any of these methods perform sufficiently well compared with the current method, if they solve the problems of the current method and if they are easy and inexpensive to produce. The performance is studied first with simulations after which the most promising methods are tested in experimentally. After the evaluation and simulations, two methods were implemented in the test setup and tested. The best performing method was connecting quarter wavelength stubs to the input connectors of the QBC. However, the results indicated imperfect detuning, and the method performed notably worse compared to the current method. It is difficult to say if this method would perform adequately in a full MRI system and hence additional testing is required.

MR-linac on kuvausohjatun sädehoidon kehittyneimpiä sovelluksia. Siinä yhdistyy lineaarikiihdytin ja magneettikuvauslaite (MRI), mikä mahdollistaa magneettikuvauksen sädehoidon aikana. Sädetysalueen kuvaaminen sädehoidon aikana parantaa säteilyannoksen tarkkuutta, mikä pienentää ympäröivien terveiden kudosten säteilyannosta. Tämä minimoi hoidon riskejä etenkin hoidettaessa jatkuvassa liikkeessä olevia kehonosia. Ionisoiva säteily ohjataan potilaaseen MRI-laitteen putken läpi säteilyikkunan kautta. Jotta säteilykeilan ominaisuudet eivät muutu, tämän ikkunan kohdalla ei voi olla elektroniikkaa tai muita esteitä. Ikkunan kohdalle asetettu elektroniikka voi lisäksi vahingoittua säteilyn takia. Näistä syistä joihinkin MRI-laitteen osiin täytyy tehdä muutoksia, joista yksi on kvadratuurilähetyskela (KLK). Jos KLK:n kanssa käytetään erillisiä vastaanottokeloja, se täytyy saattaa epävireeseen. Tällä hetkellä epävire tuotetaan 16 epävirekomponentilla, jotka sijaitsevat niin lähellä säteilyikkunaa, että ne aiheuttavat edellä mainittuja ongelmia. Tämän takia neljä uutta menetelmää KLK:n epävireen saavuttamiseksi ilman kyseessä olevia komponentteja oli kehitetty. Tämän diplomityön tarkoituksena on selvittää, voiko nykyisen epäviremenetelmän korvata uusilla menetelmillä. Tämä tehdä vertailemalla uusien menetelmien tehokkuutta nykyisen kanssa ensin simulaation avulla ja sitten mittauksilla. Lisäksi otetaan huomioon, että uusien menetelmien tulisi ratkaista nykyisen menetelmän ongelmat sekä olla helposti ja kustannustehokkaasti toteutettavissa. Simulaatiotulosten ja muiden arviointien perusteella valittiin kaksi menetelmää mitattaviksi. Näistä parempi oli menetelmä, jossa KLK:n syöttöjen liittimiin liitettiin neljännesaallonpituuden mittaiset avoimet siirtojohdot. Tällä menetelmällä saadut tulokset kuitenkin viittasivat siihen, että saavutettu epävire on epätäydellinen, ja että menetelmä on huomattavasti nykyistä huonompi. Tämän diplomityön puitteissa on kuitenkin mahdotonta todeta, onko saavutettu epävire käytännössä riittävä, ja siksi lisätestausta tarvitaan.
