Abstract
Data sharing is becoming more important in many industries, as the amount of data is growing. As data sharing has not been studied specifically in pharmaceutical industry before, the goal of the master’s thesis is to find out possibilities of data sharing between different stakeholders in the industry and what motivates pharmaceutical companies to start sharing their data.
Comprehensive literature review was conducted to understand the theory behind data sharing. To understand data sharing specifically in pharmaceutical industry, the new medicines verification system that will be launched in 2019 was used as a case for the study. The case company was the Finnish pharmaceutical company Orion. As a part of the case study, eleven interviews were conducted in the case company, and nine interviews were done in other stakeholder organizations.
The main finding of the master’s thesis is how the European medicine verification could be seen as an enabler in data sharing, and not only as a requirement or an additional cost to pharmaceutical companies. The current setting of the system does not enable data sharing, because data ownership restricts it. Data sharing with other stakeholders in the system - wholesalers, pharmacies, and end-customers is discussed. The additional benefits of the system are mostly in developing data sharing with the wholesalers and end-customers. By sharing data with the wholesalers, the logistics become more transparent, and with the end-customers, it helps pharmaceutical companies to develop more targeted services and products to the end-customers
Datan jakaminen on entistä tärkeämpää monella toimialalla, sillä sen määrä kasvaa jatkuvasti. Datan jakamista erityisesti lääketoimialalla ei ole tutkittu ennen, joten tämän diplomityön tavoite on tutkia erilaisia mahdollisuuksia datan jakamisen kautta eri toimijoiden välillä sekä mikä motivoi lääkealan yrityksiä tähän suuntaan.
Kattavan kirjallisuuskatsauksen avulla tutkittiin, että mitä datan jakamiseen liittyviä teorioita on kirjoitettu aiemmin. Datan jakamista juuri lääketoimialalla varten empiirisenä tutkimuskohteena toimi uusi lääkevarmennusjärjestelmä, joka tulee käyttöön Euroopassa vuonna 2019. Tutkimuksen kohdeyrityksenä toimi suomalainen lääkeyritys Orion. Empiirinen tutkimus pohjautuu kohdeyrityksen yhteentoista haastatteluun sekä yhdeksään ulkopuolisen asiantuntijan haastatteluun.
Diplomityön löydöksenä eurooppalainen lääkevarmennusjärjestelmä voidaan nähdä myös datan jakamisen edistäjänä eikä vain vaatimuksena tai lisäkustannuksena lääkealan yritysten näkökulmasta. Nykyisen ohjeistuksen mukaisesti järjestelmä ei mahdollista datan jakamista omistajuusrajoitteiden vuoksi. Tuloksissa käsitellään datan jakamista muiden järjestelmässä toimivien osapuolien kanssa. Suurimmat edut saadaan datan jakamisen kehittämisestä jakelijoiden ja loppuasiakkaiden kanssa. Jakelijoiden kanssa datan jakaminen tekee logistiikan osuudesta läpinäkyvämpää. Lääkealan yritykset voivat tarjota entistä kohdennetumpia palveluita ja tuotteita jakamalla dataa loppuasiakkaiden kanssa.
