LED-teknologia kehittyy nopeasti ja sillä on suora vaikutus elokuva-alaan. Valaisimet muuttuvat fyysisesti pienemmiksi ja kevyemmiksi sekä vähemmän sähköä kuluttavaksi. LED-valaisimissa on mahdollista säätää myös värilämpötilaa, valon intensiteettiä ja värejä. Nämä tuovat elokuvaajan työskentelyyn uusia mahdollisuuksia. Miten elokuvaaja voi hyödyntää omassa työskentelyssään näitä uusia mahdollisuksia ja uutta teknologiaa?
Tässä opinnäytetyössä käsittelen LED-teknologiaa elokuvauksen näkökulmasta. Mitä konkreettista hyötyä LED-valaisusta on elokuvaajan taiteelliseen ilmaisuun? Entä onko siitä jotain konkreettista haittaa? Tutkin myös, onko LED- teknologia muuttanut visuaalisen ilmaisun estetiikkaa elokuvassa. Etsin samalla ratkaisua kysymykseen, tuleeko LED-teknologia joskus korvaamaan vanhemman valaisuteknologian? Tutkimuksessa etsin myös vastausta LED-teknologian todellisesta ekologisuudesta ja ovatko LED-valaisimet todella niin ekologisia kuin valmistajat väittävät.
Tutkin aihetta perehtymällä alan kirjallisuuteen, haastattelemalla alan ammattilaisia, tuomalla esiin omakohtaisia kokemuksia ja havaintoja. Uuden teknologian kehittyminen muuttaa myös elokuvaajan ja valaisijan ammattikuvaa ja vaikuttaa siten näiden ammattilaisten päivittäiseen työskentelyyn. Opinnäytetyöni tuo esiin elokuvaajan ammattikuvaan liittyvän teknisen ymmärtämisen valaisusta, jotta kuvaajat tietävät tarkemmin mitä heidän päivittäisillä työvälineillä voidaan saavuttaa ja näin parantaa elokuvan värimäärittelyprosessia.LED technology is developing rapidly and has a direct impact on the film industry. Lightning units are becoming physically smaller and lighter, and they consume less energy. LED lamps also allow you to adjust the colour temperature, light intensity and colours of the light. These bring new possibilities to the work of a cinematographer. How can cinematographer utilize these new possibilities and new technology in their own work?
In this thesis, I will discuss LED technology from the perspective of cinematography. What concrete benefits does LED lightning have for the artistic expression of a cinematographer? And is there any concrete harm? I will also investigate whether LED technology has changed the aesthetics of visual expression in film. At the same time, I am looking for a solution to the question of whether LED technology will ever replace older lightning technology? In the research, I will also look for an answer to the ecological nature of LED technology and whether it is as ecological as LED manufacturers claim.
I research the topic by studying the literature focusing on cinema lightning, interviewing professionals in the field and highlighting personal experiences and observations. The development of new technology is also changing the professional image of the cinematographer and gaffer and thus also affects the daily work of these professionals. My thesis highlights the technical understanding of the cinematographers in lightning images. So that cinematographers know more precisely what can be achieved with their daily tools and thus improve the colour grading process of the film.
